Problems with Balance?

Fear of falling can take a toll when your sense of balance is fading. Some individuals, especially seniors, avoid walking and even moving due to a fear of falling. However, being sedentary is bad for your health, too. That is why it becomes vitally important to learn and implement balance safety and fall precautions so you can keep moving.

An estimated 90 million Americans experience dizziness at least once in their lifetime. Symptoms can last for seconds, minutes or even days. Balance and walking problems can result from many different things, and can be further compromised by certain types of conditions and medications, migraines, neurological disorders, lack of flexibility, uncorrected vision problems and much more.

Dizziness symptoms include:
 Lightheadedness
 Lack of coordination
 Feeling of passing out
 Felling of unsteadiness
 Wooziness (queasy and disoriented)
 Sensations of moving, spinning, tilting, whirling or swaying

The good news is that balance can improve with training.

“Balance programs, such as FYZICAL®, can help patients discover the pinnacle of healthy
living. A balance program will focus on strength, endurance, motion, gait training and
coordination for safe walking and preventing falls,” stated Dr. Liz Kuba with FYZICAL® Therapy
and Balance Centers. “Therapy can help reduce fall risk, improve activities at home, allow safer
community access and prolong independence. Balance and walking are important for overall
quality of life and safety.”

Therapists realize how important balance and walking are for independent living and enjoying life in general. After an initial evaluation, a therapist will provide you with a custom treatment program, which may consist of:
 Home exercise program
 Flexibility exercises
 Gait training
 Strengthening exercises
 Balance exercises
 Vestibular exercises
 Patient education
