ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Jacob Penny

Golf’s a funny game. Some people get it, others don’t. Jacob Penny belongs to the former group. He’s averaging a 37 for Durant High School this season, keeping a pace that makes him look like a lock to make it to states, with the other half of Durant’s dynamic duo, senior Chase Levesque. Oh, and guess what? He’s also a freshman. At 14, he’s better than many golfers who are two, three, or even four times his age.

How long have you been playing golf?

I first picked up a little plastic club when I was 2.

Phil Mickelson. I can’t really say Tiger Woods. Rickie Fowler. Those are my two favorites, Phil Mickelson and Rickie Fowler.

Not big on Tiger?

No. I just don’t really like the way he acts on the course. I mean, I admire the way he plays, but, not really as a person.

I also play club soccer for Basil, out there in Brandon.

How long have you been playing soccer?

Any favorite books?

I’m not a big reader.

What are you hoping to accomplish this golf season?

Try to get my average back down to par — that’s my main goal — 36.

Are you hoping to go to states, too?

That’s my goal! I hope so.
