Athlete of the Week: Amneous Chambers

One of two Charger Wrestling Club members to compete in last week’s Disney Duals, Amneous Chambers handled his business as well as anyone in his camp could have hoped for. The Spoto senior went 11-0 in sanctioned competition and earned AAU All-American honors for his performance. Chambers has been wrestling since his freshman year of high school and is learning freestyle and Greco-Roman with Crest’s club.

You kicked butt at Disney. What was the experience like for you?

It was just pushing me. In a few matches I was down but I came back because I wanted it bad. I told myself if I go out there with the same mentality for each match, I’ll become an undefeated All-American.

Any college prospects?

I have a few colleges looking at me but I don’t know what college I’m gonna go to yet. I’m gonna keep waiting for offers through the year.

What’s it going to take for you to commit somewhere?

I would like to go to a Division 1 school, but any school that has a strong business and marketing program.

How long have you been wrestling?

I started my freshman year. I was terrible. I just kept practicing and getting better.

What made you want to stick with it?

Getting beat up so much. I’ve never lost so many times. I just told myself to keep coming out and I’ll be better. I ended up making it to states my sophomore year.

What are your goals for this season?

I would like to go the season without getting taken down. And winning a state title, that would be nice.

For people who haven’t been on the mat much, how difficult is it to set a goal of not getting taken down in an entire season?

Few accomplish it. Some people end a season undefeated but it’s hard not to get taken down, always on your guard and being defensive.

You work in all three styles?

Yes, sir. I just started freestyle and Greco this summer. I’m really good at freestyle.

You’ve had a lot of experience with folkstyle, then. Which is your favorite?

I actually like freestyle. I can score a lot more. I can beat somebody 3-2 in folkstyle and in freestyle I could tech fall them. I’m just very explosive and if I get in a shot and can’t necessarily finish it, I can try to use my muscles in different positions and work a throw.

So you like how freestyle makes your natural athleticism a strength more than folk and Greco do.

Yes, sir. It does.

If you could give anyone some wrestling advice, maybe a kid at CWC newer to the sport than you, what would you tell him or her?

You have to lose a lot to get better. You’re constantly going to practice. Whether you know the moves or not, just keep practicing and eventually you’ll find what you’re good at. You can build on top of those and become a great wrestler or great athlete overall.
