VIDEO: Canadian wins Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest

It’s safe to say John Rozon won’t be craving a strawberry shortcake for a few days.

The 54-year-old from Ontario, Can. gobbled down two and one half pounds of shortcake March 7 to win the 2013 Strawberry Shortcake Eating Contest at the Florida Strawberry Festival. The four-pound strawberry shortcakes were supplied by the St. Clements Catholic Church “build your own strawberry shortcake” tent.

“I actually just ate before I came, so that probably wasn’t the best idea,” Rozon said after winning.

Contestants for the contests were drawn at random from registered prospects, but Rozon didn’t even sign up.

“They drew the name for Albert Long and no one ever stood up,” Rozon said. “People kept looking and pointing at me saying that I was Albert, so I was kind of forced to do this.”

While Rozon lost some of the shortcake in an on-stage trashcan, he did so after his remaining shortcake was weighed-in and he was announced as the winner. When it came to strategy, Rozon ate the cake and strawberries first, leaving the sweet whipped cream for last.

“The whipped cream at the end got to me,” he said.
