Plant City High School soundly defeats Morgan High School 13-0.
On Tuesday, the 2-3 Plant City Raiders welcomed the 1-4 Morgan Mustangs to their home field, looking to build momentum. Behind an explosive first inning at the plate and a dominant performance on the mound, the Raiders delivered their most complete game of the season, defeating the Mustangs 13-0 in a mercy-rule shortened contest.
Merrick Smith got the start on the mound for the Raiders and set the tone early. After the Mustangs’ leadoff batter popped up to second baseman Sal Jaramillo for the first out, Morgan managed a single to put a runner aboard. The Mustangs showed early aggression on the basepaths, stealing second during the next at-bat. The third hitter grounded into a fielder’s choice, giving Morgan two outs with a runner still in scoring position. The Mustangs continued to push the tempo and swiped another bag, but Smith shut the door by recording his first strikeout of the game to end the inning.
The bottom of the first inning proved to be the difference in the game.
Angel Silva led off for the Raiders and immediately sparked the offense with a single. Parker Scott followed with a base hit of his own, putting two runners on with no outs. Drew Cothren stepped in and delivered a clutch RBI double, bringing Silva home for the first run of the afternoon. Alex Rodriguez kept the momentum rolling, ripping an RBI double that scored both Scott and Cothren to quickly extend the lead to 3-0.
With the Mustangs reeling, Jake Carbaugh worked a walk to keep the line moving. Paul Overstreet drilled an RBI double to push the lead to 4-0. Josh Machado followed with a walk, setting the stage for Max Cieslo. Cieslo came through with a two-run single, stretching the advantage to 6-0 and keeping the inning alive.
Jaramillo came to the plate with runners on the corners, and Cieslo swiped second during the at-bat. Morgan opted to intentionally walk Jaramillo, loading the bases and bringing Silva up for the second time in the inning. Silva drove in a run on a fielder’s choice, though Jaramillo was retired at second. Silva later stole second, and Cieslo crossed the plate during the sequence. Scott eventually grounded into a double play to end the inning, but not before the Raiders erupted for eight runs and seized complete control at 8-0.
Smith returned to the mound in the second inning and continued to command the game. He walked the leadoff batter, but the Raiders’ defense responded. A fielder’s choice erased the runner at first, and another Mustang was caught stealing for the second out. Morgan managed a two-out single, but Smith recorded his second strikeout to strand the runner and preserve the shutout.
In the bottom of the second, the Raiders threatened again. Cothren drew a leadoff walk and promptly stole second. Rodriguez also walked, putting two on with no outs. Carbaugh popped out to first for the first out of the inning. A wild pitch allowed the runners to advance, but Cothren was tagged out at third in a close play. Overstreet walked to keep the inning alive, and after an error by the Mustangs’ shortstop loaded the bases, Cieslo drew a walk to force in another run and make it 9-0. Jaramillo popped out to end the inning, but the Raiders had added to their growing lead.
Aldin West took over on the mound in the top of the third and delivered an equally impressive performance. He struck out the first batter he faced, then watched as Rodriguez snagged a line drive for the second out. Morgan picked up a two-out single, but West induced a groundout to end the frame.
The Raiders’ offense continued to apply pressure in the bottom half. Silva singled up the middle for his third hit of the game. Although he was later caught stealing, Scott worked a walk, and Tytan Gill singled to put two on with one out. Rodriguez delivered again with an RBI single, pushing the lead to 10-0. Carbaugh followed with an RBI single of his own, extending the margin to 11-0. Xavior Royal grounded into a fielder’s choice, and Machado capped the rally with an RBI single to make it 12-0 before Cieslo flew out to end the inning.
West returned in the fourth and made quick work of the Mustangs. A pop-up to shortstop, followed by a strikeout and a groundout, resulted in a swift three-up, three-down inning.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jaramillo singled to lead things off. Silva struck out, but Hunter Carbaugh doubled to put two runners in scoring position. A wild pitch allowed Jaramillo to score, increasing the lead to 13-0. Bryson Plunk and Deacon Hay were retired to end the inning, but the Raiders were firmly in control.
With the mercy rule in effect, West took the mound for the fifth, looking to close it out. He hit the leadoff batter, but the runner was quickly erased attempting to steal second. West then recorded back-to-back strikeouts—his third and fourth of the game—to end the contest.
The Raiders’ dominant 13-0 victory showcased timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and strong pitching from both Smith and West. Following a balanced and complete team performance, Plant City appears poised to carry this momentum into the remainder of their season.
