The Stingrays Force Five Turnovers and Score 55 Unanswered Points.
The Stingrays wasted no time taking control, dominating the Chargers from the opening kickoff and cruising to a 55-0 shutout. From a fast start on offense to a defense that repeatedly forced turnovers, the Stingrays controlled every phase of the game and built an insurmountable lead before halftime.
The game opened with the Chargers attempting an onside kick, but they were unable to recover it. The Stingrays took over at their own 43-yard line and immediately began moving the ball. Two short runs were followed by a curl route that picked up a first down. A Chargers pass interference penalty then moved the Stingrays to the 30-yard line, putting them in excellent position.
The Stingrays continued to move the chains with back-to-back first downs before finishing the opening drive with a rushing touchdown. With 9:32 remaining in the first quarter, the Stingrays had taken a 7-0 lead.
The Chargers began their first offensive possession at their own 23-yard line. Roosevelt Miller carried the ball on the first two plays, picking up five yards and setting up a third-and-five situation. Chargers quarterback Zljohn Stallworth then kept the ball and ran for a first down.
After a short run, however, Stallworth was sacked for a significant loss, leaving the Chargers facing third-and-long. Stallworth attempted to make a play through the air, but the pass was intercepted. The Stingrays took over at their own 40-yard line and quickly turned it into more points.
The Stingrays needed only two plays to cross midfield and continued their impressive offensive performance. They eventually connected on a 20-yard passing touchdown to extend the lead to 14-0 with 1:35 remaining in the first quarter. The Chargers could not respond, going three-and-out on their next possession as the first quarter came to an end.
The Stingrays opened the second quarter with the ball at midfield and immediately added to their advantage. On the first play of the quarter, they broke off a touchdown run, pushing the lead to 21-0.
The Chargers attempted to answer on their next possession. Stallworth opened the drive with a quarterback keeper that went for no gain. The Stingrays were then called for a penalty, giving the Chargers a first down and some much-needed breathing room. However, the Chargers gave the ball right back on the very next play when they fumbled, allowing the Stingrays to take over at the Chargers’ 25-yard line.
Once again, the Stingrays made the Chargers pay for the mistake. It took just three plays to find the end zone.
Stallworth connected with Aaron Parker on a curl route for a first down on the opening play. He then dumped the ball off to Miller for a seven-yard gain before keeping the ball himself on third down for another first down. The run brought the Chargers to midfield.
Stallworth then broke loose on the Chargers’ biggest offensive play of the game to that point, keeping the ball and running deep into Stingrays territory. He was tackled inside the 25-yard line, seemingly putting the Chargers in position to finally get on the scoreboard.
Instead, disaster struck again. The Chargers fumbled after the big play, and the Stingrays recovered.
A water break was called with six minutes remaining in the first half. When play resumed, the Stingrays wasted no time extending their lead. Their first play resulted in a huge run that took them deep into the Chargers’ red zone. On the very next play, a Stingrays wide receiver was left wide open in the red zone and scored, making it 34-0.
The Chargers continued to rely on Stallworth’s ability to make plays with his legs. He broke off another designed quarterback run for a first down, nearly picking up 20 yards. But the Stingrays’ defense continued to create problems. A pass from Stallworth was deflected and intercepted, and the Stingrays returned it all the way for a touchdown.
The pick-six pushed the score to 41-0 and highlighted what had been a disastrous first half for the Chargers. A pass interference penalty later moved the Chargers to the 35-yard line, and Stallworth once again produced a strong run, taking the ball to midfield. But the Chargers could not capitalize. Stallworth threw another interception, giving the Stingrays possession at the Chargers’ 40-yard line.
The Stingrays ran out the clock to close the half with a commanding 41-0 advantage.
Because the lead was greater than 35 points, the second half featured a continuous clock that would only stop for timeouts. The Chargers received the opening possession of the second half and started at their own 20-yard line.
The drive began with a short run and an incomplete pass, leaving the Chargers facing third-and-long. An unnecessary roughness penalty against the Stingrays moved the Chargers forward 15 yards and gave them new life. Stallworth then completed a short pass to Gene Lopez for five yards before play was briefly stopped because of an injured Stingrays player.
The Chargers eventually faced a fourth-and-four near the Stingrays’ 40-yard line and lined up to go for it. However, a Stingrays offsides penalty gave the Chargers another first down.
After a water break, the Chargers struggled to move the ball. Three consecutive incompletions ended the possession, forcing them to punt. The Stingrays took over around midfield and once again went to work.
The continuous clock helped move the game into the fourth quarter, but the Stingrays continued to control the action. They opened the drive with several short passes that moved them inside the Chargers’ 30-yard line. The Stingrays quarterback then kept the ball for a first down, moving the offense into the red zone.
Another quarterback keeper produced a strong run and put the Stingrays just outside the 10-yard line. From there, the Stingrays handed the ball to their running back, who finished the drive with a 12-yard rushing touchdown. The score pushed the lead to 48-0.
With fewer than seven minutes remaining, the Chargers made a quarterback change, bringing Lyric Bagnato into the game. Bagnato began the drive with a handoff to the running back for a short gain. The next play was a deep incomplete pass, setting up third-and-long.
The Stingrays’ defense delivered the final blow moments later, intercepting Bagnato’s pass and returning it for a pick-six. The touchdown made the score 55-0 and put the finishing touch on a dominant performance.
From the opening drive through the final whistle, the Stingrays controlled the game on both sides of the ball. Their offense consistently moved the chains and capitalized on opportunities, while their defense forced multiple turnovers and turned those mistakes into points.
The Chargers struggled to find any rhythm, with turnovers repeatedly ending promising drives. Stallworth showed flashes of explosiveness as a runner, but the Stingrays’ defense ultimately overwhelmed the Chargers’ offense.
By the end of the game, the Stingrays had completed a 55-0 shutout, scoring early, scoring often, and never allowing the Chargers to establish momentum. It was a complete performance that showcased the Stingrays’ ability to dominate in all three phases and put the game away long before the final minutes.
