The Chargers defeat the Knights 36-7.
The Strawberry Crest Chargers (3-1) hosted the Robinson Knights (0-4) on Friday. The Chargers went into the game 2-0 at home this season, averaging 30 points per game while allowing 10 points per game to opponents at home.
The Chargers won the coin toss and elected to defer. It was a nice return for the Knights as they started their first drive at the 32-yard line. They started with an 8-yard run to the left side of the field, followed by a first down due to a Chargers encroachment. The Knights had a short run, followed by a short pass, but an impressive open-field tackle by Chargers Zayveon Springfield brought up third and 8. The Knights were forced to punt it after the pass was tipped by a Chargers defender.
The Chargers started their first drive at the 37-yard line with 9:10 left in the first. The first play of the Chargers offense was a hard run by Zion Weems, bringing them inside the Knights’ 45-yard line early in the drive. Weems got the ball again for an 8-yard run. The first Chargers completion came from Sevin Bagnato to Hunter Hall for the first down, putting them inside the Knights’ 30-yard line. A defensive holding on the Knights gave the Chargers an automatic first down, putting them in the red zone. The Knights continued giving up free yards with an encroachment on the next play, making it first and 10 at the 14-yard line. Bagnato threw his first incompletion of the game, bringing up second and 10. Weems continued his dominant drive with a nice run all the way to the Knights’ 6-yard line. Weems then got the touchdown for the Chargers’ opening possession with a 6-yard rushing touchdown. After the extra point, it was 7-0 with 6:30 left in the first.
After a water timeout, the Knights started their second drive at the 24-yard line. Cole Sharpless had a nice tackle for loss for the Chargers on a failed Knights run. A short curl route brought up third and 7. Another curl route was complete, but it wasn’t near the first down, and the Knights were forced to punt.
Zayveon Springfield had a nice return for the Chargers to midfield with 4:14 left in the first quarter. The Chargers tried running on first down, but there was nothing, making it second and long. Bagnato was sacked, and the Chargers faced a third and long. Bagnato had a short run but the Chargers were forced to punt. The Chargers had a bad snap and didn’t have time to punt, so the punter tried to run for a first down but failed.
The Knights took over at midfield with 1:26 left in the first. They threw an incomplete pass, bringing up second and 10. A timeout was called by the Knights with 1:18 left in the quarter. They had a nice run, getting the first down at the Chargers’ 35-yard line. They tried going back to the run and lost 3 yards, making it second and long. The Chargers had a near interception, but made it third and deep for the away team. After the incomplete pass, the Knights punted and the Chargers started at the 20-yard line.
The Chargers had a short run, ending the first quarter with the home team up 7-0.
The Chargers started the second quarter with a second and 5. Adam Eskew got the handoff and the first down for the Chargers. A holding brought them back 10 yards for a first and 20. They called a timeout with 10:59 left in the half. Eskew got the ball again and ran all the way to the Knights’ 4-yard line. They rewarded Eskew after the run with the goal-line carry, and he converted. After the touchdown, the Chargers faked the extra point and got the 2-point conversion on a pass to Rowdy Tucker. After the conversion, the Chargers tried an onside kick and recovered the ball at midfield. A facemask penalty on the Knights gave the Chargers a first down. An incomplete pass by Bagnato brought up second and 10 at the Knights’ 45-yard line. Tre Feliciano had a nice run, picking up the first down after the 15-yard carry. Feliciano was then tackled for a loss, making it second and long. The Knights had an encroachment penalty. A personal foul on the Knights gave the Chargers another first. They attempted a play-action play and were sacked for a big loss. The Chargers bounced back after the sack as Bagnato found Jayson Lewis for a big 30-yard touchdown. After the extra point, it was 22-0 with 6:05 left in the half.
The Knights started the drive at the 38-yard line. The Chargers sent a blitz, forcing the QB to throw the ball out of bounds, barely escaping the pocket. Cole Sharpless had a nice tackle on the rush attempt, bringing up third and long. The Chargers gave up the first down with a pass interference call, putting the Knights at midfield. They had a short pass followed by an incomplete, bringing up third and long. Bama Spicer had a nice deflection in the field, making it fourth and 8. The Knights lined up to go for it at midfield, but called a timeout with 4:16 left in the half. The QB ran for the first down and then some with a nice run, getting tackled at the Chargers 23-yard line. After the big conversion, Sharpless continued his big game, forcing a fumble that was recovered by Josh Hernandez. The Chargers took over at their own 35 with 3:16 left in the half.
Feliciano had a nice carry for the Chargers to start the drive. Bagnato passed to Hunter Hall on a slant route for the first down, putting the Chargers near midfield. It was second and ten after the incomplete pass, and Bagnato threw a short pass to Feliciano. On third and long, Bagnato had a solid run, bringing up fourth and 3 for the Chargers. They lined up to go for it, and the Knights went offside. After the free first down, Bagnato threw another touchdown, this time to Hall. After the extra point, it was 29-0 with 19 seconds left in the half.
The Knights had a return to the 35-yard line with 14 seconds left in the half. A pass interference call on the Chargers was a 15-yard penalty with 6 seconds left at the 50-yard line for the Knights. Nolan Catlin had a sack for the Chargers to end the half with the home team up 29-0.
The Chargers got the ball to start the second half, and they had great field position thanks to a good return by Hall. The Chargers had a loss on the play-action pass, bringing up second and long. A 3-yard run brought up third and long. Bagnato got the first down with a nice pass to Jayson Lewis, putting them at midfield. Weems had a 2-yard carry, followed by a short run by Feliciano, bringing up third and 5. Eskew came back in and got the first down on the misdirection run. Weems had a nice run. Weems then had a big run for the Chargers, putting them in the red zone. A water break was called by the officials with 6:26 left in the third. Weems got the carry after the officials’ timeout and had an 18-yard rushing touchdown. With them up 36-0, that made the clock continually run and would only stop with a timeout called. The Chargers kicked off with 3:30 left in the third.
The Knights had their best play of the game with a nice return to the Chargers 42-yard line. On the following play, a personal foul was called, giving the Knights 15 yards. The Knights got another first down with a curl route, making it first and 10 at the 11-yard line. They scored their first touchdown of the game on a dump-off pass to the RB. After the extra point, the third quarter ended with the Chargers up 36-7.
The Chargers started the fourth quarter with a drive at the 35-yard line. Omari Brown got his first carry of the game and went for 2 yards. Rashaad Addison then got his first carry and had a small gain as well, bringing up third and long. Bagnato threw a nice slant pass to Jayson Lewis for the first down near midfield. Brown had another short run, bringing up second and long. Brown had a better run, bringing up third and 2 at the Knights 45-yard line. Rashaad Addison ran for the first down on the fullback dive, and the Knights continued to struggle against the run. Brown ran for the next two plays and got another first down. A timeout was called with 6:09 left in the game. After the timeout, Brown ran for 6 yards, putting the Chargers right outside the red zone. Brown ran it for the fourth time in a row. Brown ran it again and picked up a first down. Bagnato attempted a pass and was sacked by Robinson, making it second and 13. Brown ran for a small gain. On third and long, a timeout was called with 2:57 left in the game. After the failed third down, the Chargers missed the field goal and the Knights took over in their own red zone. A timeout was called with 2:45 left in the game. The Knights had a short pass for about 5 yards, and even though the WR ran out of bounds, the continuous clock kept it running. The Knights had an incomplete pass, bringing up third and long, and then their QB ran it for a solid gain. The Knights decided not to run another play, and the game ended with the Strawberry Crest Chargers remaining undefeated at home with a final score of 36-7.
