The Chargers battled until the end but came up with the loss.
On Tuesday night, the Strawberry Crest Chargers (7-1) hosted the Wesley Chapel Wildcats (6-1) in a highly anticipated matchup between two strong teams. Both squads entered the game with impressive records, setting the stage for a competitive battle on the diamond. While the Chargers showed flashes of offensive production and resilience late in the game, a big third inning by the Wildcats proved to be the difference as Wesley Chapel secured a 10-4 victory.
The Chargers sent Saxon Shah to the mound to start the game. Shah opened the contest with confidence, quickly retiring the Wildcats’ leadoff hitter as he grounded out to shortstop Nico Cappucci. The next batter managed to reach base with a sharply hit single between third base and shortstop. However, the Chargers’ defense responded immediately. The following batter grounded into a double play, with second baseman Jaxon Beattie making a strong play to end the inning and keep the Wildcats off the scoreboard.
Leading off the bottom of the first for Strawberry Crest was Rueben Vasquez, but he struck out in his first plate appearance. Toby Highsmith followed and delivered the Chargers’ first hit of the game with a solid single. Josh Cespedes then hit into a fielder’s choice that erased Highsmith at second base. With two outs, Cappucci stepped to the plate. During the at-bat, Cespedes stole second base to move into scoring position. Cappucci was eventually struck out to end the inning, keeping the game scoreless early.
Shah returned to the mound in the second inning and again worked efficiently. The Wildcats’ leadoff hitter grounded out to Chargers third baseman Christian Lopez. The next batter singled through the right side, and another single soon followed to put two runners on with one out. A fielder’s choice recorded the second out while moving runners to second and third. Shah then delivered his first strikeout of the night to escape the jam and send the game to the bottom half of the inning.
The Chargers offense was unable to capitalize in the second. Yusvanny Parra led off but grounded out to first base. Bubba Blount followed with a strikeout, and Tripp House also struck out, ending the inning with the score still tied.
The Wildcats broke through in the top of the third inning. The leadoff hitter singled to start the rally, and a wild pitch moved him to second base. A walk then put two runners on with no outs. Another wild pitch advanced both runners into scoring position. Wesley Chapel took advantage with an RBI single that brought home the first run of the game. With runners on the corners and still no outs, another RBI single extended the lead to 2-0.
The Wildcats continued to apply pressure as another wild pitch advanced both runners again. A third RBI single of the inning drove in two more runs, pushing the Wesley Chapel lead to 4-0. Shah managed to regroup, striking out his second batter of the night for the first out of the inning. The next hitter popped up to shortstop for the second out, and Shah closed the inning with another strikeout to limit further damage.
Strawberry Crest responded in the bottom of the third. Lopez led off and reached base after an error by the Wildcats’ third baseman. Beattie followed and also reached on a Wesley Chapel error, putting runners on the corners. Vasquez then laid down a bunt that resulted in an out but allowed Lopez to score the Chargers’ first run. With one out and a runner on second, Highsmith grounded out to the pitcher. Cespedes then delivered an RBI single that cut the deficit to 4-2. During Cappucci’s at-bat, Cespedes stole second base again, but Cappucci struck out to end the inning.
The Chargers turned to left-hander Jayden Taylor in relief in the fourth inning. Taylor provided a quick shutdown frame, inducing a flyout to left field before recording a strikeout. The final out came on a ground ball to Beattie at second base, giving the Chargers a clean three-up, three-down inning.
However, the Chargers offense struggled to gain momentum. In the bottom of the fourth, Parra, Blount, and House all struck out in order as the Wildcats pitcher recorded a strikeout of the side.
Taylor remained on the mound to begin the fifth inning and retired the first batter with a flyout. The next hitter doubled deep to left field near the warning track, and a single soon followed to place runners on the corners. Grady Prior came in to pitch in relief, but the Wildcats added to their lead immediately with an RBI single to make it 5-2. A walk loaded the bases, and another single brought in a run to extend the lead to 6-2. The Wildcats kept the pressure on with yet another RBI single that scored two more runs, pushing the score to 8-2 before the inning finally ended.
In the bottom of the fifth, Lopez reached base again to lead off the inning. Beattie struck out, and Vasquez grounded into a fielder’s choice for the second out. Highsmith then struck out, preventing the Chargers from mounting a rally.
The Wildcats continued their offensive production in the sixth inning. The first two batters were walked, putting runners on with no outs. Left-hander Asher Stoltzfus entered in relief for the Chargers. Stoltzfus walked his first batter to load the bases. A ground ball double play brought in another run to make it 9-2, and an RBI single later in the inning pushed the lead to 10-2. Stoltzfus ended the frame with a strikeout.
The Chargers threatened briefly in the bottom of the sixth when Cespedes led off with a single. Cappucci struck out, and Ivan Sada entered the game for his first at-bat. After a wild pitch advanced Cespedes to second, Sada struck out. Adam Renfroe also struck out to end the inning.
Beattie took over pitching duties in the seventh and delivered a quick inning, retiring the Wildcats in order with a flyout to center field followed by two quick outs.
Strawberry Crest mounted a late push in the bottom of the seventh. Deagan Yahrmatter led off with a strong double on the first pitch he saw. Lopez then drew a walk to put two runners on base. Beattie grounded into a fielder’s choice for the first out, and Vasquez followed with another fielder’s choice that brought home a run. With two outs, Highsmith hit a ground ball to third base, but an error allowed another run to score and kept the inning alive. Cespedes then worked a walk to load the bases.
With two outs and the Chargers hoping for a late comeback, Cappucci stepped to the plate. However, the Wildcats pitcher recorded the final out to secure the 10-4 win for Wesley Chapel.
Despite the loss, the Chargers showed determination throughout the game and continued battling until the final inning. Strawberry Crest will look to regroup as the season continues, while the Wildcats leave with a strong road victory.
