The Chargers take down the Bulls 28-20.
It was spooky season as the Strawberry Crest Chargers (5-4) took on the Bloomingdale Bulls (3-6). The home team Bulls, won the coin toss and deferred, giving the Chargers first possession. Zayveon Springfield took the opening handoff after the touchback for a gain of 4. Tre Feliciano then took a carry for 2 yards. On Sevin Bagnato’s first pass attempt of the game, he found Jose Aponte wide open for the Chargers’ touchdown. After the extra point, it was 7-0 Chargers with 10:28 left in the first.
The Bulls started their first possession at the 30-yard line. After two short runs, the Bulls found a wide open WR for the first down at the Chargers’ 34-yard line. Another nice pass put the Bulls in a first and goal at the 10. The Bulls RB then took the handoff for a touchdown for the home team. After a missed 2-point conversion, it was 7-6 Chargers with 8:17 left in the first.
Bagnato was sacked on the Chargers’ first down, bringing up second and long. After a short run, Bagnato found Jayson Lewis for a first down. An unsportsmanlike penalty on the Bulls tacked on an additional 15 yards, putting the Chargers at midfield. Feliciano had a 6-yard run right before the officials called a timeout with 5:57 left in the first. Rashaad Addison had a nice carry for the Chargers, putting them at the Bulls’ 30. After three runs, the Chargers lined up to go for it on fourth and 1. The Bulls went offside and gave up the first down. Bagnato found Hunter Hall for a big gain, making it first and goal at the 1. Feliciano ran it in for the touchdown. It was 14-7 with 1:28 left in the first. The Chargers attempted an onside kick but were unsuccessful, so the Bulls started their drive at the 47-yard line.
A false start on the Bulls backed them up 5. After three straight runs, the first quarter was over with the Chargers up 14-6.
The second quarter started with the home team Bulls, facing a fourth and 2 at midfield. They lined up to go for it. The Bulls picked up the first down on the read option run by the QB. They were backed up on first down with a 10-yard holding penalty. Then the Chargers had a horse collar penalty called on them, moving the Bulls into the Chargers’ red zone. Jose Aponte clutched it up for the Chargers with a nice interception in the end zone. They took over at the 20 with 8:51 left in the half.
The Bulls had a pass interference called on them on the first play of the drive, costing them 15 yards. The Chargers got another first down after back-to-back runs. After a 9-yard run, the Chargers had a holding penalty to make it second and 11. Springfield ran for a first down. An official’s timeout was called with 5:56 left in the half. Feliciano had back-to-back runs for the Chargers, giving them a fresh set of downs at the 14-yard line. After a short run, the Bulls gave up 5 more yards on an encroachment. After three more runs, the Chargers got a first and goal at the 4-yard line. After a rush for no gain, the Chargers called a timeout with 19 seconds left in the half. Bagnato’s pass was incomplete after the timeout. Bagnato snuck it in for the Chargers’ touchdown. After the extra point, it was 21-6 Chargers at halftime.
The Bulls got the ball to start the second half down 15. A facemask penalty on the Chargers gave up 15 yards on the return. After two short runs, the Chargers gave up another 15 yards on a targeting penalty. Bama Spicer had a nice tackle for loss on the Bulls RB. A timeout was called by the Chargers with 9:20 left in the third. The Bulls were faced with a third and long after a short pass. The QB scrambled for the Bulls but was short. The Bulls went for it on 4th and 3, and the Chargers gave up a first down on an encroachment. A false start backed the Bulls up 5 yards. On the next play, multiple Chargers sacked the QB, making it second and 22. The Bulls got the first down after a screen pass went for a big gain. It was first and goal at the 8 for the home team, and they ran it to the 1-yard line. The Bulls ran it in for the touchdown and lined up for the 2-point conversion and converted. It was 21-13 Chargers with 5:51 left in the third.
The Chargers started their first possession of the second half at the 31. The first possession was a quick three and out as the Bulls took back over after the punt with 3:30 left in the first.
The Bulls’ offense continued to move nicely with three straight runs to put them at midfield. On the next play, Aponte drilled the Bulls WR as he forced the incompletion. The Bulls QB then had back-to-back runs to bring up fourth and 5. They lined up to go for it. The Bulls converted the first down, and a facemask penalty on the Chargers gave the Bulls one more play in the third. The Bulls made them pay as they got the touchdown. After a missed extra point, the Chargers led 21-20.
The Chargers had the ball at the 20-yard line. After a short run, Bagnato found Aponte for a first down. After another short run, the Bulls gave up 5 more yards on an encroachment. Bagnato sold an incredible play action and found Rowdy Tellez for a big gain inside the Bulls 20-yard line. After two Chargers runs, it was third and 1, and not only did Bagnato get enough for the first down, but the offensive line pushed him in for the touchdown. After the extra point, it was 28-20 Chargers with 6:26 left in the game.
The Bulls QB tried running but gained nothing. A false start made it second and 15. A small screen made it third and 11 for the Bulls with under five minutes left in the game. The Chargers sent the blitz, and the Bulls QB threw it away. They were forced to punt after the three and out.
The Chargers had a great return and took over at the Bulls’ 30-yard line with 4:22 left in the game. Rowdy Tellez strong second half kept going with an 8-yard run. Springfield was tackled for a loss, bringing up third and 4. A timeout was called by the Cougars with 2:28 left in the half. Bagnato was sacked on the play, and on 4th down, the Bulls called a timeout with 2:18 left in the game. The Chargers missed the field goal, and the Bulls took over at the 20-yard line with 2:14 left in the game.
The Chargers got a huge sack on first down as multiple defenders got to the QB. On second and 17, the pass was incomplete. The following play was intercepted by Hunter Hall, and the Chargers took over at the Bulls 15-yard line with 1:25 left in the game.
A personal foul on the Bulls gave the Chargers an additional couple of yards. The last timeout was then called by the Bulls with 1:15 left in the game. The Chargers then kneeled it for a couple of plays, and the final score was 28-20 Chargers.
