Chargers baseball stays hot with win over the Gryphons.
On a warm Tuesday evening, the Strawberry Crest Chargers varsity baseball team (14-5) welcomed the Sickles Gryphons (12-7) to their home field for what quickly turned into a competitive and momentum-filled matchup. With both teams looking to build late-season confidence, the game delivered early offense, key pitching changes, and clutch defensive plays as the Chargers ultimately secured a 6-3 victory.
The Gryphons wasted no time getting started against Chargers starting pitcher Saxon Shah. The opening batter flew out to left fielder Josh Cespedes, but Sickles quickly found a rhythm at the plate. A single followed by a stolen base put early pressure on the Chargers’ defense. After a walk placed two runners on with one out, the Gryphons capitalized with an RBI single to take a 1-0 lead and move a runner into scoring position. Moments later, a fielder’s choice resulted in another run crossing the plate, extending the lead to 2-0. Despite the early damage, Cespedes came through defensively again, tracking down a fly ball in left field to end the inning.
Trailing by two runs, the Chargers responded immediately in the bottom of the first inning. Reuben Vasquez sparked the offense with a leadoff single and aggressively stole second base during Toby Highsmith’s at-bat. Highsmith then lifted a fly ball to center field, allowing Vasquez to tag up and advance to third. Nico Cappucci followed with a clutch RBI single, cutting the deficit to one. Cespedes continued his strong start with a double to left field, putting two runners in scoring position. Yusvanny Parra tied the game at 2-2 with a fielder’s choice that brought Cappucci home. Although Bubba Blount struck out to end the inning, the Chargers had already evened the score and shifted the momentum.
The second inning saw more challenges for the Chargers on the mound. Shah recorded his first strikeout of the game but allowed a walk and a double that threatened to restore the Gryphons’ lead. A critical defensive play at home plate on a fielder’s choice prevented a run, but with two runners still on base, the Chargers opted for a pitching change. Jayden Taylor entered in relief and, with help from first baseman Parra, escaped the inning by stranding both runners.
In the bottom of the second, the Chargers took control. Adam Renfroe struck out to begin the inning, but Tripp House reached base with a single. Jaxon Beattie then executed a bunt that led to a costly error by the Gryphons’ third baseman, allowing House to score and Beattie to advance to third. Vasquez came through again with an RBI single, extending the Chargers’ lead to 4-2. Although the inning ended shortly after, Strawberry Crest had seized the advantage.
The Gryphons answered back in the top of the third, putting together a threatening rally. After a leadoff out, Sickles strung together two singles and took advantage of a wild pitch to move runners into scoring position. A walk loaded the bases, and another walk forced in a run, cutting the Chargers’ lead to 4-3. With the bases still loaded and only one out, the Chargers made another pitching change, bringing in Bubba Blount. The move proved crucial, as Blount delivered a strikeout and induced a flyout to escape the jam without further damage.
Both teams settled into a more defensive rhythm over the next two innings. In the fourth, Blount retired two batters with pop-ups to Cappucci before an error allowed a runner to reach base. However, the inning ended without consequence. The Chargers were unable to capitalize offensively in their half of the fourth, going three up and three down.
Blount continued to impress on the mound in the fifth inning, retiring the Gryphons in order with a groundout, strikeout, and pop-up. The Chargers had a chance to add insurance in the bottom half when Highsmith walked, and Cappucci reached on a hard-hit ball, but a fielder’s choice ended the inning and kept the score at 4-3.
The tension remained high in the sixth inning as Blount maintained control. After recording two quick outs, he allowed a double that put the tying run in scoring position. However, a routine fly ball to left field ended the threat and preserved the Chargers’ lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, Strawberry Crest finally created some breathing room. Blount led off with a single, and Christian Lopez followed with a solid hit to right field. Deagan Yahrmatter, appearing in his first at-bat of the game, delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 5-3. Although Lopez was tagged out at third base, the Chargers continued to apply pressure. A heads-up baserunning sequence later in the inning resulted in another run scoring, pushing the advantage to 6-3 before the inning came to a close.
With three outs separating them from victory, the Chargers turned to Zalen Hicks on the mound in the seventh inning. The Gryphons opened with a single, but any hopes of a comeback quickly faded. A sharply turned double play erased the baserunner, and a final pop-up sealed the 6-3 win for Strawberry Crest.
The Chargers’ victory was fueled by timely hitting, aggressive baserunning, and strong bullpen performances. Vasquez led the offensive charge with multiple key hits, while Cespedes contributed both at the plate and in the field. On the mound, Blount’s clutch relief appearance proved to be the turning point, shutting down the Gryphons during their most threatening moments.
With the win, Strawberry Crest improved to 15-5 on the season and continued to build momentum as the schedule progresses. The team’s resilience after an early deficit and ability to execute in critical situations highlighted their potential as a formidable contender moving forward.
