After a 13-13 season, the best season since 2021, the Chargers played host to the Hillsborough Terriers.
The game started with the Chargers winning the tip-off off and they quickly got to the free throw line, and Max Von Ancken was 2-2. Corteze Hill got the home crowd hyped with a shot-erasing block. The Chargers couldn’t convert on the fast break, but then the Terriers got a fast break layup to tie the game. Hunter Hall hit the first 3-pointer of the game with a nice baseline shot to make it 5-2. With 6:28 left in the first, the Terriers got to the free-throw line and went 2-2. Von Ancken got to the free-throw line again after hustling for an offensive rebound and went 2-2. Hall then stole the ball and found Van Ancken for the fast break layup. The Chargers kept it going on the next possession as Corteze Hill got an offensive rebound and put back. The Terriers got back to the free-throw line after attacking the paint. They went 1-2 from the line, but they got an offensive rebound putback after the miss. Chargers Trey Jones quickly attacked on the other end for a layup. The Terriers then answered back with their first 3 of the game. Austyn Brown checked in for the Chargers and made an immediate impact with a 3-pointer. On the next possession, Brown got to the free-throw line and went 2-2. A timeout was called with 3:48 left in the quarter, with the Chargers leading 18-12.
The Terriers got to the free-throw line after the timeout and went 1-2 from the line. On the next Terriers possession, Von Ancken had a nice block. Jayson Lewis got his first basket of the game with a fast-break layup. The Terriers then turned it over after not being able to inbound the pass. After a little scoring drought, the Terriers hit a mid-range pull-up, followed by three free throw attempts after they were fouled on a missed 3. The shooter went 2-3 from the line. Von Ancken drove to the paint and scored for the Chargers, followed by one from Trey Jones. The first quarter ended 24-19 with the home team Chargers in the lead.
The second quarter started with an aggressive pace by the Terriers, but the Chargers’ Hall slowed it down with a mid-range pull-up. Trey Jones then got a fast break layup. The home crowd got hyped as Jayson Lewis had a nice dunk, followed by a 3-pointer from Hall. The Terriers scored to end a 9-point run, but Hall hit another 3. Bryton Lawson checked back in and hit a 3 for the Chargers. The Terriers had a solid stretch where they got a layup, followed by two free attempts on the next possession, and they went 1-2 from the line. Hall kept it going with a nice and one, but he missed the free throw. The Terriers got a nice offensive rebound put back, but Hall hit another 3 on the next possession for the Chargers. A timeout was called with 1:28 left. Trey Jones got a fast break layup after the timeout thanks to a Chargers steal. The half ended with Jayson Lewis finding Trey Jones for a Chargers 3 to end the half, with the Chargers up 49-29.
The Chargers got to start the third, and Lewis started off with a nice mid-range pull-up. The Terriers responded with a fast break layup. The Chargers dunked it, but hung on the rim, so the Terriers got a technical free throw. The Terriers responded with a dunk of their own. Both defenses turned it up in the third quarter as both teams went a couple of minutes without scoring. The Terriers got to the free-throw line and went 1-2. The Chargers then went on a 6-0 run. The Terriers got a nice offensive rebound and put back to end the drought. Austyn Brown hit a nice floater for the Chargers, and the Terriers called a timeout with a minute left in the third quarter. After the timeout, the Chargers stole the ball, and Lewis found Austyn Brown for the wide-open layup. Lewis then got a nice and one. It was the end of the third quarter, and the home team Chargers, had a commanding 71-44 lead.
Carter Valentin checked in the fourth quarter and made his first shot attempt on a mid-range pull-up, followed by a Terriers layup, followed by a Hunter Hall layup. Bryton Lawson then got to the free-throw line for the Chargers and went 2-2. The Terriers hit some free throws, but Lewis had a nice fast break layup for the Chargers. Lewis then had another fast break layup. The Terriers’ big man had a nice post-up 2, but then Carter Valentin hit a pull-up 3. The Terriers got to the free-throw line and went 1-2 from the line. The Terriers then pulled up for a nice mid-range. Aayon Gupta got to the line for the Chargers and went 1-2. The Terriers hit a 3, and the game was over. The Chargers started the season 1-0, with an 86-62 victory.
