SPRING FEVER: Flowering into Spring

The fields at the Futch ranch are already growing green again, but this time, it’s not in preparation for the Fox Squirrel Corn Maze festival.

Instead, the Futches are offering a new event this season that promises to be as fresh and fragrant as the spring air. The family’s field is going to be covered with sunflowers, and a festival will be held.

“We want to have several events out on the ranch. We like sharing it with people from all over,” Janet Futch, of Futch Entertainment, said. “They enjoyed the corn maze so much and being out in the tranquil setting. (Sunflowers at the Ranch) is going to be similar, but not the same. A little more laid back.”

Sunflowers at the Ranch is not a maze, but there are paths through five acres of fields of sunflowers, zinnias and other wildflowers. Visitors are likely to see an abundance of butterflies and might catch a glimpse of one of the famous fox squirrels.

After strolling among the blooms, there will be a host of games and activities for families to enjoy, like at the October corn maze.

The General Store will be open, catering to antique collectors or anyone looking for eclectic and “shabby chic” items. No one will have to go hungry, with sizzling options such as corn on the cob, burgers, pulled pork and hot dogs.

Everyone will also have a chance to express their artistic abilities.

“Instead of painting pumpkins, (we’re) going to have this craft station for children and adults to enjoy together,” Futch said.

Wooden birdhouses and flowers will be available for painting.

Sunflowers at the Ranch will be open for the first two weekends in May and coincide with Mothers’ Day.

“We’ve heard about other fields that are out there and thought, ‘Let’s do something around Mothers’ Day.’ What better thing to do than flowers?” Futch said.
