Small Town, Big Screen: When Hollywood Finds Its Way to Plant City

When people think of movies filmed in Florida, places like Miami beaches or the skyline of Tampa usually come to mind. But tucked between strawberry fields and quiet neighborhoods, Plant City has quietly played host to film crews, actors, and cameras, proving that small-town charm can be just as cinematic.

Over the years, several productions have used Plant City’s homes, streets, and local businesses as backdrops, giving residents the fun experience of seeing familiar places flicker across the screen.

No Postage Necessary: Plant City as Itself

The romantic dramedy No Postage Necessary may be one of the most “spot-the-landmark” films for locals. Even better, the movie stars Charleene Closshey, a Plant City native, which makes the hometown connection even more meaningful.

The film doesn’t just pass through…it fully embraces the area. One of the most recognizable locations is a classic Florida icon: Twistee Treat, whose giant swirl-shaped stand makes an unmistakable appearance. Longtime residents might also remember scenes filmed at the former Corner Store at Reynolds and Palmer, a neighborhood fixture that added an authentic, lived-in feel to the story.

A home on Horseshoe Drive served as a key residential filming location, turning an ordinary Plant City house into a central piece of the movie’s world. The production also used the local Winn-Dixie, grounding the story in the everyday rhythms of real Florida life.

Downtown Plant City gets its moment too, with various street shots capturing the historic charm and slower pace that make the area unique. And for those with sharp eyes, there’s even a slice of local flavor on screen: a pizza from Esposito Pizza appears on the table inside a house. A tiny detail that quietly celebrates a hometown favorite.

What We Hide: A Darker Turn in Familiar Places

Plant City also provided the setting for the tense thriller What We Hide, starring McKenna Grace and Dacre Montgomery (of Stranger Things fame). While the film’s tone is far more suspenseful than the breezy charm of No Postage Necessary, the use of local locations once again highlights how visually versatile the area can be.

A Plant City home was used as a primary filming site, its quiet residential setting adding to the story’s uneasy, intimate atmosphere. The production also filmed scenes at a local pawn shop, transforming a familiar type of neighborhood business into a key piece of a much darker narrative.

For viewers who know the area, it’s a strange and fascinating experience, seeing streets and storefronts that feel safe and familiar suddenly take on a more ominous role.

My Girl: A Touch of Nostalgia

Long before these more recent productions, Plant City had a small but memorable role in the beloved coming-of-age film My Girl. While the movie is set in Pennsylvania, parts of it were filmed in Florida, including a scene that Plant City residents may recognize.

The poetry class scene was filmed inside the historic 1914 Plant City High School. With its early 20th-century architecture and old-school classroom feel, the space perfectly matched the film’s nostalgic tone. For locals, it’s a point of pride to know that a building with so much community history also lives on in a classic film.

Nearby Neighbors on Film

Plant City isn’t alone in catching Hollywood’s eye. The iconic Edward Scissorhands was filmed in parts of nearby Lutz and Lakeland, where pastel neighborhoods and distinctive homes helped create the movie’s surreal suburban world. Tampa frequently hosts film and television productions as well, thanks to its mix of urban, coastal, and historic settings.

Still, there’s something special about seeing Plant City itself on screen, not standing in for somewhere else, but simply being what it is.

Additional films that have used Plant City filming locations include Chu & Blossom (2014) and horror/thriller flick, The Wild Man (2022).

From ice cream stands and grocery stores to historic schools and quiet homes, Plant City offers filmmakers something many bigger cities can’t: authenticity. These aren’t backlot replicas or dressed-up sets. They’re real places where people live, shop, study, and gather.

And for residents, that’s part of the magic. Watching a movie and suddenly spotting a familiar street corner or favorite restaurant creates a unique connection between story and place. It’s a reminder that even a small town can have a big-screen moment, and that sometimes, Hollywood’s best locations are hiding in plain sight.
