FOOTBALL

+ Appreciation night at SCHS

Chargers head coach John Kelly and the rest of the Crest family want to thank young football players and cheerleaders for giving it their all on game days.

For the game against Middleton, Crest is holding “Youth Football and Cheerleading Appreciation Night.” Any child who wears their football or cheerleading uniform will get free admission Friday, Sept. 11. Kickoff is scheduled for 7:30 p.m., weather permitting.

CROSS COUNTRY

+ Plant City High starts strong

The 2015 cross country season began Sept. 1, and Plant City is already experiencing the ups and the downs.

The good news: PCHS started strong with a third-place finish on both sides at the Sept. 1 Eastern Hillsborough Invitational. Luke Whitmore finished second overall but led for most of the boys race. On the girls’ end, Cassie Highsmith finished fourth overall.

At Saturday’s Lecanto Invitational, the PCHS boys finished sixth and the girls placed seventh.

The bad news: Highsmith suffered a foot injury that, following a recent visit to the doctor, was determined to be two metatarsal fractures in her foot. She is expected to be out of action for the next six weeks, and head coach Drew Martucci hopes that she’ll be ready to go in time for regionals.

VOLLEYBALL

DHS RECAP

Durant took on Plant Thursday, Sept. 3, and took a 3-1 loss on the road. Durant did manage to take the third set, 27-25, but failed to top 17 points in the others.

Results from Thursday evening’s district opener at Lennard were not available at press time.

PCHS RECAP

Plant City most recently picked up a 3-2 win over a tough Riverview team at home. After falling behind early, 2-0, Plant City took the next three sets, 25-23, 25-23, 15-12, to steal the game away.

The Lady Raiders are enjoying a break until their Wednesday, Sept. 16, home game against Lennard.

SCHS RECAP

The Lady Chargers got their first win of the season Tuesday, Sept. 8.

Crest went to Armwood with a chip on its shoulder and walked out of the gymnasium with a 3-0 win. It dominated the first set, 25-7, before winning the following sets with 25-21 and 25-17. Terra Brooks led the Lady Chargers with three kills and three solo blocks, and Danielle Oberle chipped in with nine assists.

SWIMMING

+ Crest, PCHS pick up wins

Plant City and Strawberry Crest met at the Walden Lake Golf & Country Club pool for one of the first swim meets of the season Tuesday, Sept. 1.

Despite some strong performances on the Plant City end, such as first-place finishes from Jackson Nichols (50 free) and the girls relay team (200 medley), Crest swept the event. The girls won, 106-64, and the boys won, 116-55.

In Plant City’s next meet, both teams swept Brandon as the girls won, 95-57, and the boys won, 101-46.
