VOLLEYBALL

+ Durant unstoppable at Lakeland invite

Stop me if you’ve heard this one before: The ladies of Durant volleyball have won again.

This time, they went to Lakeland for a two-day tournament and swept the whole thing. The Lakeland Invitational, held Oct. 5 and 6, also featured district rival Plant City, which led to an interesting scenario.

After dispatching Haines City, the Lady Cougars beat the Lady Raiders 25-21, 25-19 in an early match. On the final day, Durant beat tournament host Lakeland to advance to the championship, leading to a rematch with Plant City. Durant was stronger this time, winning 25-13, 25-17. But, that’s not where the story ends.

The district rivals will meet once again at 7 p.m. Oct. 10, at Plant City.

GOLF

+ Raiders win big against Chamberlain

It hasn’t exactly been a banner year for the Plant City boys golf team, but maybe it just needed a big win to get things going.

They got the win against Chamberlain Oct. 3, at Walden Lake, putting up a 160-202 effort. William George led the Raiders, as well as all golfers, with a 38. Nick Stare was right behind him with a 39, matching the Chiefs’ low man, and Jordan Genevie and Jarrod Driskell rounded out the top four with a 41 and a 42, respectively.

Other than that 39, the Chiefs had a rough outing. The rest of their top four scorers shot a 49, a 51 and a 63.

The win improved the Raiders’ record to 3-8 overall.

FOOTBALL

+ P.C. Dolphins take four in rivalry

Last week’s Strawberry Crest-Durant matchup wasn’t the only rivalry game in town.

Just ask the Plant City Dolphins.

They hosted the Turkey Creek Trojans Oct. 5, winning in four out of five divisions.

The Mighty Mites game was the closest of the five, with Plant City holding on to win, 26-25. The Pee Wee Dolphins got a solid 18-7 win, and the Midget Dolphins were a little more effective in a 30-18 victory.

But, the Trojans weren’t ready to quit right there. They bested the Junior Varsity Dolphins 26-0. In Varsity play, however, the Dolphins followed up with a 48-0 blowout.

Plant City will be back in action Oct. 12, when the Dolphins travel to Gibsonton to take on the East Bay Buccaneers.
