A motorist suspected of fatally shooting another man in a road rage incident Wednesday morning was administering CPR when deputies arrived, the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office said.
The shooting happened about 7 a.m. along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard east of Forbes Road. Someone working nearby said it appeared that several gunshots were fired.
"One subject stopped his car in front of the other, got out and an argument ensued," sheriff's Col. Donna Lusczynski said during an 8:30 a.m. news conference at the scene.
One of the men shot the other, Lusczynski said, then attempted unsuccessfully to revive him.
"He was trying to do the right thing and make sure the individual would survive," she said.
Lusczynski said the victim was in his 40s. Neither man was immediately identified by the Sheriff's Office.
The shooter was cooperating with deputies, Lusczynski said. It was unclear if he acted in self-defense, but Lusczynski said investigators were not expected to make a decision Wednesday about whether to pursue criminal charges.
The intersection was expected to be closed for several hours during the investigation. The Sheriff's Office asked motorists to take alternate routes to avoid delays.
Cathi White, a manager at a convenience store and gas station nearby, said she heard a number of gunshots this morning coming from the east along Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
"It went 'boom, boom, boom, boom,'" White said. "I saw the deputies blocking off the road and I knew something was wrong down there."
