Bill Nye the science guy has nothing on Durant High School’s Science Club.
Two teams from the Plant City school competed at two separate science events last weekend, and both placed.
Moreover, one already is guaranteed a spot in a national competition.
Durant’s National Ocean Science Bowl team won the regional science bowl, held Feb. 23, at the University of South Florida’s St. Petersburg campus. They will be representing the region at the national event that will take place in Milwaukee, Wis.
There are two regions in Florida and 25 in the nation.
“We’re extremely proud of the team and fully expect them to represent Durant very well,” Science Club sponsor Jeremy Lynch said.
This will be the fourth time Durant has qualified for the national competition. The National Ocean Science Team includes seniors Macie Jones, Jamie Neylan and Ricardo Areingdale; junior Eduardo Areingdale; and sophomore Chris Springfield. Their coach is Kelly Cook.
The National Ocean Science Bowl is a Jeopardy-style quiz competition.
“Ocean science is more interesting than the others,” Jones said. “I like the animals and the chemistry of it.”
Durant also had two second-place finishes and one third-place finish at the regional competition for the Science Olympiad at the Hillsborough County Community College Campus, in Brandon.
“We will find out soon if this will be sufficient to qualify for the state competition,” Lynch said.
Durant participants included seniors Steven Aubain, Jennifer Callejas, Marianna Curcio, Brian Daley, Jesse Mathis, Lexi Vandenberg and Brandy Bradell; juniors Daniel Butler, Jennifer Butler, Shelby Januzys, Nick Wilbur and Jahvon Johnson; sophomores Cassandra Hanlon and Sara Skapyak; and freshmen Irwing Nieto and Jake Raschke. Their coach is Missy Allison.

THREE’S COMPANY
Another Durant High School team will be competing in the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science’s National Science Bowl March 9, at Cypress Bay High School, in Weston. The winner of the regional competition will advance to the National Science Bowl, which the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Science hosts annually to encourage today’s youth to pursue careers in science and math.
Like the National Ocean Science Bowl, the National Science Bowl is a Jeopardy-style competition. Students competing include seniors Natalie Raschke and Jacob Bernier; junior Brent Hovan; sophomore Ashley Womer; and freshman Aidan McFarland. Their coach is Jeremy Lynch.
