For the Plant City Fire Department, since January 1, the department had a total of 1,515 calls. Firefighters responded to 76 motor vehicle crashes, 50 fires, and 1,097 EMS calls.
Meghan Edwards, administrative assistant for the fire department, said Plant City followed all Hillsborough County outdoor burn guidelines, and the emergency burn ban was extended for the ninth consecutive week. She said this is the worst drought conditions since 2001 across the state.
“Plant City is 5.72 inches below normal rainfall margins according to the National Weather Service, which makes our burn ban extremely important to follow,” Edwards said.
The fire department wants to remind residents that hurricane season is 75 days away, and it’s important to start creating a plan and preparing your homes.
The department has nine new firefighter recruits joining the team on March 23. Edwards also said Plant City Fire Rescue became one of the few fire departments in surrounding areas to implement TraumaGel on every unit for pre-hospital care.
The data reflects steady activity levels for both departments as the city heads into the spring season and prepares for hurricane season.
