Plant City man dead in crash

An accident at the intersection of Pippin Road resulted in a fatality Saturday just before 6 a.m., according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Emiliano Lopez Hernandez, 33, of Plant City, was approaching the intersection in his gold 2001 Chevrolet Venture van when he turned in front of a gray 2010 Honda Accord, which had the right of way, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Accord, driven by 22-year-old Sean McLendon, also of Plant City, was traveling at approximately 50 miles per hour when it approached the intersection. McLendon was unable to stop the car in time and hit the van. According to the Sheriff’s Office, the rusted frame of the Chevrolet separated and the van broke in half upon impact.

Hernandez was found dead at the scene and two other passengers were transported to Tampa General Hospital and Lakeland Regional Hospital with serious injuries. McLendon was taken to Tampa General with non life-threatening injuries, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The Sheriff’s Office does not believe alcohol played a role in the accident.
