The Saladino Tournament opened with an early test for the Strawberry Crest Chargers as they faced the Plant City Raiders in tournament play. Despite a late rally, the Chargers were unable to overcome an early deficit and ultimately fell 8–4 in the opening matchup.
The Raiders wasted no time getting on the board against Chargers starting pitcher Saxon Shah. Leading off the game was Alex Rodriguez, who jumped on the very first pitch he saw and sent it over the fence for a solo home run. The blast gave the Raiders an immediate 1–0 lead and energized their dugout from the opening moment.
Shah quickly settled in following the early homer. Drew Cothren flew out to center field for the first out of the inning, and Max Cieslo followed by grounding out to the second baseman. Keegan Wilkerson then fouled out, allowing Shah to limit the damage and send the game to the bottom of the first with the Chargers trailing by one.
Wilkerson took the mound for the Raiders and began his outing against Chargers’ leadoff hitter Reuben Vasquez. Vasquez got the offense started with a hard-hit single up the middle, giving Strawberry Crest an early baserunner. Toby Highsmith followed but popped up to the shortstop for the first out. Nico Cappucci also popped up, putting the Chargers in danger of stranding their runner.
With two outs, Vasquez took matters into his own hands by stealing second base. The aggressive baserunning paid off when Josh Cespedes lined an RBI single that brought Vasquez home to tie the game at 1–1. Cespedes advanced to second on the throw to the plate, but the rally ended when Bubba Blount grounded out to third to close the inning.
The second inning belonged to Shah on the mound. Devin Dukes led off for the Raiders, and after working the count full, Shah recorded his first strikeout of the game. Jake Carbaugh followed and became Shah’s second consecutive strikeout victim. Paul Overstreet briefly threatened the inning by ripping a first-pitch double to center field, putting the go-ahead run in scoring position. However, Shah bounced back by striking out Sal Jaramillo to strand the runner and keep the game tied.
In the bottom of the second, the Chargers were unable to build momentum offensively. Deagan Yahrmatter grounded out to begin the inning, while Tripp House worked a walk to give Strawberry Crest a runner. The opportunity slipped away when Christian Lopez popped up to the infield and Jaxon Beattie grounded out to end the inning with the score still knotted at 1–1.
The Raiders broke the tie in the top of the third inning. Parker Scott started the rally with a leadoff single and then stole second during Rodriguez’s at-bat. Rodriguez delivered again, driving in Scott with an RBI single to give the Raiders a 2–1 advantage.
The inning continued to snowball for the Raiders. Cothren drew a walk to put two runners on, and Cieslo reached on a fielder’s choice for the first out. With runners still aboard, Wilkerson delivered the biggest hit of the inning—a two-run double that stretched the lead to 4–1.
At that point, the Chargers made a pitching change, bringing in Ivan Sada in relief of Shah. Sada managed to stop the bleeding by retiring the next two batters. Dukes was caught out in center field, and Carbaugh flew out, ending the inning but leaving Strawberry Crest facing a three-run deficit.
Wilkerson continued to control the game on the mound for the Raiders. In the bottom of the third, Vasquez grounded out to start the inning, Highsmith flew out deep to center field, and Cappucci drew a four-pitch walk to give the Chargers a base runner. However, Cespedes grounded into a fielder’s choice to end the inning with the Raiders still ahead 4–1.
The fourth inning moved quickly on both sides. Overstreet walked to begin the top half, but the Chargers’ defense responded with a double play when Jaramillo popped up, and the runner was doubled off. Scott then flew out to center field.
In the bottom of the inning, Blount drew a leadoff walk, but the Chargers could not capitalize. Yahrmatter grounded out, House grounded out to third, and Lopez grounded out to Rodriguez, keeping the score at 4–1.
The Raiders added to their lead in the fifth inning. Rodriguez stayed red-hot with a leadoff double, putting himself just a triple away from hitting for the cycle. After Cothren grounded out, moving Rodriguez to third, Cieslo reached on an error that allowed Rodriguez to score and extend the lead to 5–1.
Chargers pitcher Asher Stoltzfus recorded a strikeout of Wilkerson, but the Raiders pushed across another run during Dukes’ at-bat, stretching the advantage to 6–1 before the inning ended.
The Raiders created even more distance in the sixth inning against Chargers pitcher Yusvanny Parra. Carbaugh and Overstreet opened with back-to-back singles, and pinch-hitter Josh Machado drew a walk to load the bases. Scott then delivered a clutch single that drove in two runs, giving the Raiders an 8–1 lead.
Although the Raiders left the bases loaded after a pitching change brought Blount to the mound, the damage had already been done.
The Chargers showed resilience in the bottom of the seventh inning. Lopez grounded out to begin the frame, but pinch-hitter Evan Queen sparked hope with a hustle single. Vasquez followed with a fielder’s choice before Highsmith delivered an RBI double that cut the deficit to 8–2.
The Chargers kept pushing. Cappucci singled to bring in another run, and Cespedes added an RBI single to trim the score to 8–4. Blount singled to put two runners on base and keep the rally alive.
However, the comeback fell just short. Yahrmatter grounded out to end the game, sealing the Raiders’ 8–4 victory in the tournament opener.
Despite the loss, the Chargers showed determination late in the game, scoring three runs in the final inning and putting pressure on the Raiders’ bullpen.
