The Raiders defeat the Spartans 42-7 to remain undefeated.
The Plant City Raiders hosted the Spoto Spartans on Friday. The Raiders looked to advance to 3-0 after starting the season with wins against Blake and Durant. They elected to defer, opting to receive the ball to start the second half of the game. Raiders Henry Pettys had a nice tackle on the opening kickoff as the Spartans started the drive on the 22-yard line. On the very first play of the game, the Spartans fumbled and the Raiders’ Brock Snyder recovered the ball, putting the Raiders at the Spartans’ 18-yard line. Ty’one Cooper got a handoff in motion to start the drive, but was tackled for a loss. Ta’Vare Miller’s first pass attempt was a throw to the end zone to find Haven Pierce for the touchdown. The Raiders were up 7-0 with 11:01 left in the game.
A taunting penalty by the Raiders backed them up on the kickoff, so Spoto started at the 42-yard line. The first play of the second drive for the Spartans started with a solid run up the middle, followed by another turnover. This time Jarvis Sherman intercepted it, and the Raiders took over at the Spartans’ 40 with 10:14 left in the first. The drive started with an incomplete shot deep from Miller to Pierce. A bad snap backed the Raiders up deep, bringing up third and long at midfield. After an incomplete pass, the Raiders were forced to punt.
The Spartans took over at their own 19-yard line. The Spartans’ offense started with no gain, followed by a dropped ball, bringing up third and long. They got the first down with a nice catch near the sidelines, putting them at their own 40. The following play was for no gain. A small screen went for a solid gain, bringing up third and short. The Spartans threw an incompletion, but a 10-yard Spoto holding penalty backed them up to replay the down. After another dropped ball, they were forced to punt it.
The Raiders started the next possession at midfield due to a nice punt return by Taevion Parker. Maurian Hugee got a solid run, then he caught a pass, bringing up third and short. The Raiders were stuffed, and they lined up to punt on 4th and short.
The punt pinned the Spartans inside their own 10-yard line with 4:24 left in the first. A personal foul on the Raiders gave the Spartans a free 15 yards to start the drive. An encroachment by the Raiders moved the Spartans up more. After a free 20 yards, the Spartans tried running it and got nowhere. The Raiders brought the blitz, and holding was called on the Spartans, bringing up second and long. A Spartan’s false start backed them up to the 17-yard line for second and long. Oscar Valdez got a nice sack for the Raiders, bringing up third and 30. A timeout was called with 2:28 left in the first. After an incomplete pass, the Spartans lined up to punt, and it was blocked.
The Raiders took over at the 5-yard line. Julien Fontilme had a carry for the Raiders, followed by a bad snap, bringing up third and goal at the 3. Miller threw his second touchdown of the game, this time to Adam Robinson. After the extra point, it was 14-0 with 1:01 left in the first.
The Spartans had a kick return touchdown, but it was called back due to a holding penalty. The drive started at the 35-yard line. Te’Marce Miller had a nice tackle for loss to start the drive for the Raiders’ defense, followed by a near interception by Zion Walden. That first quarter ended with a score of 14-0, Raiders. The Spartans started the second quarter with a third and long, and the pass went incomplete, forcing them to punt.
The Raiders took over at the 25-yard line. A pass interference on the offense was called, backing them up to the 13-yard line. Ta’Vare Miller kept the ball for a short gain, followed by a huge pass to Haven Pierce, putting them at midfield. Pierce was hit hard but still brought it in. Ta’Vare Miller scrambled for a nice 20-yard run first down, putting them at the Spartans’ 30-yard line. The following play was incomplete, but was followed up with another Raiders touchdown. Miller escaped the pocket and found Pierce for a touchdown. It was 21-0 with 9:43 left in the half. A penalty on the Raiders backed them up on the kickoff, so the Spartans got the ball at midfield, but not before Demonti Wilson had a big tackle for the Raiders’ defense. After a short run, the Spartans picked up a first down. They picked up another first down, and a Raiders personal foul put the Spartans in the red zone for the first time in the game. A curl route made it second and goal at the 3. Wilson intercepted it in the end zone, the third turnover forced by the Raiders.
The Raiders took over at the Spartans’ 30-yard line with 6:28 left in the half. A defensive holding gave the Raiders free yards. Maurian Hugee had a nice run, getting inside Spartans territory. Hugee then got a screen for about 8 yards, bringing up second and short at the 26-yard line. Jamir Stready had a solid carry, then the Raiders called a timeout with 3:23 left in the half. After the timeout, Miller was sacked, bringing up third and 10. A Raiders false start backed them up more, making it third and 15. An incomplete pass brought up fourth down, and they lined up to go for it on 4th and 15. They did it again as Miller threw a pass to Adam Robinson. After the extra point, it was 28-0 with 2:15 left in the half.
The Spartans brought in a backup quarterback and were forced to punt after three straight incompletions. The punt put the Raiders at midfield with 50 seconds left in the half. A Raiders holding penalty backed them up with 48 seconds left. Miller threw an incomplete pass. After a few first downs, the Raiders called a timeout with 5 seconds left in the half. The quarterback was sacked, ending the first half with a score of 28-0.
The Raiders had a kickoff return to start the second half, but it was called back due to a penalty. Maurian Hugee had a huge run for the Raiders, running it all the way to the Spartans’ 30-yard line. A bad snap backed the Raiders up for a loss of 2, bringing second and long. A short run gained a first down after a facemask penalty on the Spartans. With a fresh set of downs, the Raiders went for an end zone fade, but it was incomplete. Taevion Parker had a catch for the Raiders, bringing up third and 7 in the Spartans’ red zone. A short run by Hugee brought up 4th and short, and they lined up to go for it. Julien Fontilme got the handoff for the touchdown. It was 35-0 Raiders with 8:18 left in the third.
With the score of 35-0, it was a running clock the rest of the game; the clock will not stop unless a penalty or timeout is called. Spoto started their first drive of the second half at their own 20-yard line with a short run. Defensive pass interference was called, moving the Spartans up 15 yards. They had a nice 5-yard screen to move the ball near midfield, followed by another screen to the RB, putting them inside Raiders territory. The QB kept it for a solid run, bringing up second and short. The QB kept it again for a big run, the biggest of the day for the Spartans. It put the Spartans in the Raiders’ red zone. He ran it for the third time for an 8-yard gain. Raiders Da’Zariyan Jenkins stopped the momentum for the Spartans with a big sack, bringing up third and long. An incomplete pass brought up 4th and long, and they lined up for a field goal. The field goal was no good, ending the third quarter with the score 35-0, Raiders.
Collin Henderson checked in at QB for the Raiders to start the 4th and instantly found Zarian Woodley for a first down. Henderson then threw an incomplete pass, bringing up second and 10. Another incompletion brought up third and 10 for the Raiders, and Henderson found Adam Robinson for a first down, putting them at midfield. On the following play, Terrance Queen got a nice slant and turned it upfield for the first down. Ty’one Cooper caught a slant and brought it all the way to first and goal at the 2. Jamir Stready took the goal line carry for a touchdown, extending their lead to 42-0 with 7:10 left in the game.
A nice Spartans return took them to midfield with 5:15 left in the game. An official timeout was called following the return. Evan Reeves and Oscar Valdez got a nice tackle for loss for the Raiders to start the drive, but the Spartans QB scrambled outside the pocket for a first down inside the Raiders’ 40. They picked up another first down with a nice throw to put them at the Raiders’ 25. An injury timeout was called with 3:18 left in the game. After the timeout, a false start on the Spartans backed them up 5. The Spartans QB kept it for a nice scramble, bringing up second and short inside the Raiders’ 15. A defensive penalty gave the Spartans a first down. It was first and goal at the 10-yard line for the Spartans after the first down. Their QB scrambled for the touchdown, making the final score 42-7.
