The Raiders defeated the Cougars 3-2.
In a tightly contested matchup between the Cougars and the Raiders, dominant pitching, timely hits, and a handful of costly mistakes defined a dramatic 3–2 Raiders victory.
The game opened with Cougars ace Tristan Macpherson taking the mound against Raiders leadoff hitter Parker Scott. Macpherson wasted no time establishing control. Scott grounded out on the very first pitch of the game. Drew Cothren followed, but Macpherson recorded his first strikeout of the night. With two outs, Alex Rodriguez stepped in, only to become Macpherson’s second strikeout victim as the Cougars’ starter delivered a perfect three-up, three-down inning.
The Raiders countered with Hunter Carbaugh on the mound, and he matched Macpherson pitch for pitch early on. Facing Cougars leadoff hitter Brady Kelley, Carbaugh struck him out on three pitches. Aiden Juntilla worked a full count and drew a walk, becoming the first base runner of the game. The Raiders quickly erased the threat by catching Juntilla stealing during Jacob Purcell’s at-bat. Carbaugh struck out Purcell to end a scoreless first inning.
Macpherson continued to dominate in the second. Jake Carbaugh struck out on three pitches, followed by Keegan Wilkerson going down on a full count. Paul Overstreet struck out as well, giving Macpherson three strikeouts in the inning and five through two frames.
Carbaugh answered in the bottom half. Shawn Graves struck out for Carbaugh’s third punchout. Jackson McClellan sent a deep fly ball to center, but it was hauled in for the second out. With two away, Macpherson—batting as the designated hitter—stepped in, but Carbaugh struck out his counterpart to end another scoreless inning.
In the top of the third, James Martinez grounded out on the first pitch. Josh Machado drew a walk to give the Raiders their first base runner, but Macpherson struck out Sal Jaramillo for his sixth strikeout. Machado was then caught stealing ending the inning.
The Cougars broke through in the bottom of the third. Tanner Gonser led off with a single to center. Caleb Lambert followed with a RBI double over the left fielder’s head, putting the Cougars on the board, 1–0. Brennan Bailey lifted a sacrifice fly that allowed Lambert to score, extending the lead to 2–0. Though Brady Kelley grounded out and Juntilla walked, Jacob Purcell added a single to put two on with two outs before Graves grounded out to end the inning. The Cougars had seized momentum with a 2–0 advantage.
The Raiders responded in the fourth. Parker Scott drew a walk on a full count and aggressively stole second. A throwing error allowed him to advance to third. After Macpherson struck out Cothren for his seventh strikeout, Alex Rodriguez delivered an RBI single to cut the lead to 2–1. Rodriguez then stole second and advanced to third on another errant throw. Although Jake Carbaugh struck out, Rodriguez scored on the sequence to tie the game at 2–2. Wilkerson flew out to end the inning, but the Raiders had evened the score.
Defense took center stage in the fifth. McClellan grounded out, and Rodriguez made a spectacular play at shortstop to rob Macpherson of a hit. Gonser struck out, marking Carbaugh’s fifth strikeout. In the top half, Macpherson struck out Overstreet and Martinez before Machado popped out, keeping the game tied.
The Cougars threatened in the bottom of the fifth when Bailey singled on a full count, but Kelley and Juntilla were retired to end the inning. In the sixth, Macpherson continued his impressive outing, striking out Jaramillo for his 10th strikeout. However, Scott again proved troublesome, drawing another full-count walk. This time, the Raiders capitalized. Drew Cothren delivered an RBI single to score Scott and give the Raiders a 3–2 lead. Macpherson recorded his 11th strikeout by fanning Rodriguez, but the damage was done.
In the bottom of the sixth, Wilkerson relieved Hunter Carbaugh and immediately made his presence felt. He struck out Purcell on three pitches and fanned Graves for his second strikeout. McClellan grounded out, sending the game to the seventh with the Raiders clinging to a one-run lead.
Haydn May took the mound for the Cougars in the top of the seventh and kept the deficit at one. Wilkerson hit a sharp ball, but a slick defensive play by the Cougars shortstop recorded the out. Overstreet and Martinez both flew out, setting up a dramatic final frame.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars mounted one last push. Macpherson led off with a double, igniting hope for the home crowd. Gonser followed with a flyout to left, but Lambert was hit by a pitch, putting two runners on with one out. Brennan Bailey stepped up in a pivotal moment. On a full count, Bailey hit into a double play, abruptly ending the rally and the game.
Behind clutch hitting from Cothren, aggressive base running from Scott, and strong relief pitching from Wilkerson, the Raiders secured a hard-fought 3–2 victory. Despite Macpherson’s impressive 11-strikeout performance, the Raiders capitalized on key opportunities to escape with the win in a classic pitcher’s duel.
