VOLLEYBALL: Durant wins district crown

Brittany Wade now has 100 wins and three district titles to her name, following Thursday’s big win over Strawberry Crest. In her own words, this made her feel “insane.”

The good kind of “insane,” that is.

“Only my team knew, and my mom knew, that it was my 100th win,” Wade says. “But (the Lady Cougars) did this for themselves. They didn’t do it for me. These girls are a team, they’re a family and they deserve this more than I ever do.”

For Durant fans, it’s hard not to feel that way: the Lady Cougars won, 3-1, while closing out the fourth and final set swiftly and soundly. Those in attendance sang some Ramones, stomped the finish off of the wooden bleachers and rushed the court when it was all said and done.

After taking a 2-0 lead, the Lady Cougars appeared primed to close things out. But Morgan Miltner’s Lady Chargers weren’t ready to go down without a fight, and they held a slim lead over Durant for much of the third set. While the Lady Cougars did pull into a 22-22 tie, Crest promptly took the next three points and forced a fourth set.

Durant got ahead early, taking a 4-1 lead, and never looked back. Crest caught up several times, including cutting its deficit to 15-10 at one point, but that was when the Lady Cougars shifted gears and capitalized on several of Crest’s mistakes.

After the game, Wade had nothing but praise for the way Crest played.

“They’re a very good team,” Wade says. “I could never put it past them that this game could have went to five (sets). They’re a very tough team … I have the ultimate respect for Strawberry Crest.”
