UPDATE: No one injured in Plant City TECO fire

A truck caught fire at the TECO Energy building this afternoon off South Alexander Street, in Plant City.

The Plant City Fire Department suspects the fire started in one of the trucks and spread to the rest of the fleet. No one was injured and the inside of the building suffered only smoke damage.

David Ware, manager of the fleet department, was on duty when he noticed the initial smoke.

“I was walking out of one of the buildings and saw smoke,” Ware said. “When I got up closer to it, it was already pretty smokey and when I got closer I saw the flames, so I went back over and one of the guys in the garage called 9-1-1 and then ran through the building to make sure no one was in there.”

Resident Jennifer VanHorn, who was at the pool at Hunter’s Ridge apartments, said she heard an explosion and saw smoke.

“We were sitting at the pool and heard a huge explosion, and about five minutes later, black smoke started to come over the pool area,” she said. “It became too smoky, so we went to our apartment.”
