The annual Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Festival has officially begun, kicking off with a series of speeches at the MLK Rec Center Friday morning.

After a performance by the Lincoln IB Elementary Choir, guests were welcomed by Mayor Mary Thomas Mathis and the Improvement League. The Marshall Middle School Gentleman’s Quest program showed up to recite some of Dr. King’s most famous quotes, as well as some others that they had memorized, and leader Stanley Glover spoke of the importance of King’s teachings.

The Rev. Maxie Miller closed the ceremony with stories from his past, noting how far society has come since 1963. Complimentary food and cake were served after the closing prayer.
