The Evelyn and Batista Madonia, Sr. Agricultural Show Center on the Florida Strawberry Festival grounds was the safest place in Plant City Tuesday night, as it hosted the 51st annual East Hillsborough Law Enforcement Appreciation Dinner.

Approximately 370 active and retired officers and their families came out for the annual event, which began in 1962 in honor and memory of Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. Ben Wilder, who was shot and killed on duty at a home located southeast of Plant City while responding to an arrest warrant.

Four agencies were represented at the event — the Plant City Police Department, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the Florida Highway Patrol and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission.

Officer of the Year awards were given to members of each agency. This year’s recipients are senior patrol officer Paul Tester (Plant City Police Department), Det. Anthony Collins (Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office), trooper Anthony Palese (Florida Highway Patrol) and investigator Thomas Graef (Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission).

Agency retirees, including former Plant City police chief Bill McDaniel, were also recognized.

Each Officer of the Year received a plaque, along with $800 in cash and gift cards from sponsors. The title sponsor was Central Florida Custom Homes, Inc., while Mosaic and Tampa Electric were captain sponsors.

A total of $1,200 was given away in $100 increments as door prizes to three members or family members of each of the four agencies.
