Mastering the five d’s of dodgeball

Sixteen teams thanked Chuck Norris during the 3rd annual Rise Plant City Dodgeball Tournament, which was held at the Plant City Family YMCA on June 1.

Teams with names ranging from Jaws and Genies to Daj Mabal gathered to take part in the event, practicing under the motto, “If you can dodge a wrench, you can dodge a ball.” Some came head to toe in costume while others went for more athletic apparel. Regardless of if they were wearing blue spandex leotards or lime green jerseys the teams battled it out on the court.

Two games took place simultaneously with stands filled with excited onlookers and waiting contestants. As the whistle was blown the six teammates charged the middle line, grabbing the colorful balls as they prepared to send their opponents to “ouchtown.” As teams were eliminated four more took their place on the court.

Judges Vicky Saunders and Paul Davis judged the costumes of each team and selected their top winners for Best Team Name, Best Team Costume and Sportsmanship Award.
