City takes over organizing annual downtown festival as tradition continues Sept. 26.
Plant City’s fifth annual Oktoberfest is returning to downtown on Sat., Sept. 26 from 3:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. This year, the city’s Parks & Recreation Department is taking the reins to run the popular downtown festival alongside the Plant City Chamber of Commerce, promising to keep all the favorite traditions alive. Attendees can look forward to German-inspired food, biergartens, live music, local vendors, games and family-friendly entertainment.
The festival was previously organized by Plant City Main Street. According to city officials, the transition followed discussions with Main Street representatives while the nonprofit continues searching for a new executive director. “Our goal is to continue this highly anticipated community tradition while supporting local businesses and creating a fun, family-friendly experience for residents and visitors,” Parks & Recreation Director Julie Garretson said.
Garretson said the decision followed “a productive conversation” between the city and Plant City Main Street, adding that both organizations have a strong working relationship and look forward to continuing to collaborate on future community initiatives.
Attendees can expect much of the same experience that has made Oktoberfest one of downtown’s signature events. “This year’s Oktoberfest will be very similar to previous years, with only minor enhancements and operational improvements,” Garretson said. “The overall theme, atmosphere and traditions that attendees have come to enjoy will remain the same while Parks & Recreation focuses on delivering another successful event for the community.”
The decision to transfer responsibility for the event was made by City Manager Bill McDaniel after briefings and conversations with the City Commission and was announced during the commission’s July 13 meeting. The festival will be funded through existing Community Redevelopment Agency and Parks & Recreation budgets.
Garretson said Plant City Main Street has remained engaged throughout the transition. “Plant City Main Street has been extremely helpful and open to assisting the city any way they can,” she said.
City officials said the change does not signal a broader shift in responsibility for downtown events. There are currently no plans for Parks & Recreation to assume management of other downtown events, with any future decisions to be evaluated individually based on community needs and available resources.
