The longtime local favorite returns with a renovated dining room, expanded sports viewing experience, and gratitude for the community that stood by it.
After nearly a year of rebuilding following a devastating fire, O’Brien’s Irish Pub is preparing to fully welcome customers back as the restaurant begins a soft opening and looks ahead to an official grand reopening celebration.
Owner Mike Goodwin said the most difficult part of the rebuilding process was navigating the uncertainty that followed the fire.
“The biggest challenge was the uncertainty. There wasn’t a clear roadmap, and every step seemed to bring new obstacles—whether it was insurance, construction, permits, or simply waiting. It tested our patience, but it also reminded us why we wanted to rebuild in the first place. O’Brien’s Irish Pub has been a staple in Plant City for 19 years, and we were determined to bring it back even better than before.”
Goodwin said support from the Plant City community made a difficult year much easier for both him and his staff.
“The support has been overwhelming in the best possible way. From our neighbors in The Villages of Walden Lake to fellow local businesses like Paddy Wagons, Duke’s Brewhouse, 1916 Irish Pub, Bruton’s Cigar Lounge, and especially the Elks Lodge, the encouragement we received meant so much. The Elks Lodge generously welcomed us to host our long-standing Trivia Nights at their location for several months, allowing us to continue that tradition while we recovered. Knowing that so many people were rooting for us made a difficult year a little easier and gave our team something to look forward to. We’re incredibly grateful to be part of a community that truly supports its local businesses.”
While the fire was an unexpected setback, Goodwin said the renovation gave the team an opportunity to make meaningful improvements while preserving the atmosphere guests have come to expect.
“While this wasn’t an opportunity we ever wanted, we decided to make the most of it. Guests will notice a refreshed look, updated finishes, and improvements throughout the restaurant that create an even better dining experience.”
“We also wanted to make O’Brien’s an even better place to watch sports, so we installed all new 75 inch TVs throughout the pub, along with a 23 foot by 6 foot video wall that can be displayed as one massive screen or split into five separate screens. At the same time, we were careful to preserve the atmosphere and hospitality that people have always associated with O’Brien’s. We wanted it to feel familiar while also feeling new.”
As reopening approaches, Goodwin said the emotions are centered on gratitude and excitement.
“More than anything, we’re excited and incredibly grateful. It’s been a long journey filled with plenty of ups and downs, so reaching this point feels incredibly rewarding. We can’t wait to see familiar faces, welcome back our regular guests, and bring our team back together. It feels like we’re finally turning the page and beginning an exciting new chapter, and we’re looking forward to creating new memories with the community that has supported us every step of the way.”
The experience also reinforced what owning a local restaurant truly means.
“This experience has reinforced that owning a local restaurant is about so much more than the food you serve. It’s about the relationships you build with your employees, your guests, and your community. We were reminded that people don’t just come here for a meal—they come here to celebrate milestones, catch up with friends, watch the big game, and make lasting memories. Knowing how much O’Brien’s means to so many people made rebuilding even more important to us, and we’re proud to continue serving the Plant City community for years to come.”
The restaurant completed its final inspections on July 2 and is currently operating in a soft opening while staff members adjust to the newly renovated space.

Goodwin also shared a message of appreciation for the customers who supported O’Brien’s throughout the past year.
“Thank you! We truly can’t say it enough. Your patience, encouragement, and support carried us through one of the most challenging times we’ve ever experienced. Thank you to everyone who came out to our St. Patrick’s Day pop up event in the parking lot and to those who joined us for Trivia Nights at the Elks Lodge. Every message, phone call, and word of encouragement reminded us why we were so determined to rebuild and reopen.

Goodwin said the past year has been challenging, but reopening O’Brien’s is about more than returning to business. It is about restoring a place where the Plant City community has gathered for nearly two decades to celebrate milestones, watch games, enjoy live entertainment, and make lasting memories.
