John David Becton Sr., Alice B. Embry, Effie C. Gilmet, James Daniel Mathis, Sylvia Romero and Jimmy Doyle Tollar

John David Becton Sr.

John David Becton Sr., 70, of Dover, died July 19, at his home.

Born Nov. 30, 1941, in Sparks, Ga., to the late Samuel David and Sara Wilkes Becton, Mr. Becton was the beloved husband of Donna Banks Becton. He was preceded in death by a brother, Eddie Becton, and sister, Juanita Butler.

Surviving are sons Robert, John David Jr., Jesse R., James H. and John B. Becton; daughter Lydia Becton; 11 grandchildren; brothers Pete, Melvin and Billy Becton; and sisters Barbara Jean Tindale, Joann Garret, Patsy Anderson and Kathy Igli.

A funeral service was Monday, July 23, at Haught Funeral Home Chapel, 708 W. Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd., Plant City. A cremation followed.

Alice B. Embry

Alice B. Embry, 86, died July 14.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James.

She is survived by three daughters, Barbara Minerva, Mary Margiotti and Kathy Walker; son James Embry Jr.; and grandchildren Debbie Minerva, Tony Minerva, Jessica Embry and Jazmine Walker.

A Celebration of Life service was July 21, at Wells Memorial Funeral Home, 1903 W. Reynolds St., Plant City.

Effie C. Gilmet

Gilmet, Effie C. 89, of Lakeland, died July 21, of cancer.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Theodore “Ted” Gilmet.

Mrs. Gilmet lived and worked in New York City for 25 years. Retiring from Sky Chef, she moved to Plant City in the early 1970s. She and Ted married in 1986 and moved to Lakeland.

She is survived by her son, Lou Fiorentino, of Lakeland; grandson and granddaughter-in-law Michael and Charlene Fiorentino of Nashville, Tenn. She has one great-grandchild due in September.

A viewing was July 24, at Wells Memorial Funeral Home, Plant City.

James Daniel Mathis

James Daniel Mathis, 71, of Plant City, died on Sunday, July 15.

He was born Aug. 26, 1940, in Wauchula.

Survivors include sister Bertha Gillam; and his companion, Bertie Peeples Dunbar.

Funeral services were Wednesday, July 18, at Haught Funeral Home Chapel, 708 W. Dr. MLK Jr. Blvd., Plant City.

Sylvia Romero

Sylvia Romero, 22, died July 11, in Tampa.

She was born in Tampa on May 14, 1990, to Faustino and Silvia (Ocegueda) Romero.

She is survived by her parents; brother Adrian Romero; and two sisters, Monica and Patricia Romero.

Funeral services were July 17, at St. Clement Catholic Church, Plant City.

Jimmy Doyle Tollar

Jimmy Doyle Tollar, 61, of Plant City, died on Sunday, July 15.

He was born Monday, Feb. 12, 1951, in Eudora, Ark.

Survivors include daughter Melissa (Kristofer) Smith; brothers Charles Tollar, Ray Tollar and Grady Tollar; sister Ann Rogers; and grandchildren Austin and Alyssa Smith.

The family received friends July 18, at Haught Funeral Home Chapel.
