PLANT CITY POLICE DEPARTMENT RESPONDS TO PERSON IN WATER
On October 10, at approximately 12:22 p.m., officers from the Plant City Police Department (PCPD) responded to a 911 call reporting a possibly deceased male subject in the creek at Rowena Mays Park located within the 1300 block of W. Risk St. Upon police arrival, officers located an adult male on the bank of the creek. Life saving measures were attempted, including the use of an Automated External Defibrillator, but no pulse was detected.
The identity of the individual is being withheld as the circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation, and no further details are available currently. The Plant City Police Department extends its deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased. ELKS NATIONAL HOOP SHOOT
In partnership with the Plant City Elks Club, the Parks & Recreation Department is hosting the 2025-2026 Elks National Hoop Shoot Free Throw Contest – Preliminary Round Competition on November 1. The event is from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Sadye Gibbs Martin Community Center, 302 S Maryland Ave. in Plant City.
Boys and girls ages 8 to13 (as of 4/1/2026) are eligible to compete in this free event. Winners will advance to the Lodge-Level Competition and have a chance to advance to the Districts, States, and Regionals, up to the National Finals in Chicago. DOXAPALOOZA: A TAIL-WAGGING DAY OF FUN
DARE (Dachshund Adoption Rescue & Education), a 501(c)3 rescue based in Florida, is thrilled to announce the return of Doxapalooza 2025, the organization’s 19th annual dachshund-centered fundraiser, on Saturday, November 1, at Keel Farms.
Attendees will enjoy a full day of excitement, including wiener dog races presented by the Florida Wiener Dog Derby, costume contests, lick-a-lot contest, lure course racing by Swift Paws, live and silent auctions, food trucks, and vendor booths featuring dog treats, crafts, dachshund merchandise, and much more.
“Doxapalooza isn’t just a fundraiser—it’s a celebration of all things dachshund,” Alicia Duval, President of DARE, said. “Every race, every raffle ticket, every costume, every tail wag helps us continue our mission to save and place dachshunds in loving homes.”

NATIONAL TAKEBACK DAY
Saturday, October 25, is the Drug Enforcement Agency National Takeback Day. From 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m., people can bring unwanted or expired prescription medications to drop off at the Walgreens located at 1802 James L Redman Pkwy. This safe and anonymous event helps keep prescription medication out of the wrong hands.
BOOK SALE
Friends of Bruton Memorial Library will be holding their biannual book sale at the library on November 7 from noon to 5:00 p.m., and November 8 from noon to 3:00 p.m. Used books in excellent condition for adults, young adults, and children will be available at just $2.00 for hardcovers and $1.00 for paperbacks. Several beautifully-wrapped or Christmas-decorated books will also be available for $3.00 each. It’s a cash only sale. All proceeds go to support numerous library programs that serve the entire community. Donations of books in excellent condition are always welcomed by Friends of the Library to use in the library bookstore throughout the year.
COUNTY ROADS WON’T TAKE YOU HOME
Two Hillsborough County roads will be closed for four days each for CSX railroad crossing maintenance. County crews also will be on site to ensure the roads have smooth transitions across the finished tracks. Sydney Washer Rd. will close between Salem Church Rd. and Sydney Dover Rd. from 10/27 to 10/31. South Forbes Rd. will close between Sydney Rd. and Varnadore Ln. from 11/3 to 11/7.
STREET LANES TO CLOSE IN PLANT CITY
Lanes will be closed along E. Herring St. and N. Illinois St. between 10/27 and 10/30 while 13 soil borings are taken.
