TECO IMPROVEMENTS IN PLANT CITY
The Storm Protection Plan strengthens power poles, modernizes infrastructure, undergrounds powerlines and trims trees to improve reliability and to reduce power restoration times after severe weather. The program began in 2020. In the Plant City area, Tampa Electric Company (TECO) has converted more than 64 miles of overhead power line to underground. Twenty more miles are planned in coming years. TECO has more than two dozen underground projects currently under construction in Plant City. In addition to moving some power lines underground, Tampa Electric is also strengthening other equipment for severe weather. One example is they have replaced more than 700 poles with stronger, more storm-resistant poles. Another 400 are scheduled for replacement in Plant City.
TECO partnered with the City of Plant City on a state-of-the-art battery storage project at the Sadye Gibbs Martin Community Center, at 302 S. Maryland Ave. The research and development project was funded by TECO. The project is evaluating how battery storage can help lower the building’s energy use at peak times, such as the hottest part of the day. This may help lower energy costs. The system has been operational for about two months.
