Competition in Plant City showcases BBQ Teams.
On Friday and Saturday, 47 professional and 14 backyard barbecue teams converged on the Plant City Pig Jam to try to prove they are the best of the best. The public got in for $5. In this Kansas City Barbeque Society-sanctioned competition, Vegan Tears, When Pigs Die, Low Eye Que, and other teams gave eaters barbequed chicken, pork, beef, and fish. Those who wanted to take part in judging which barbecue is best could buy a Tasting Kit for $10, get two-ounce samples, and get a voting ticket to put in the box of their chosen favorite.
Vendors added their booths to the Randy Larson Sports Complex to complement the barbecue with roasted corn, beans, boiled peanuts, kettle corn, sweet treats, and smokin’ merch. Pig Jam also hosted moonwalks and a climbing wall for the kids, and a stage for live music.
A portion of the money brought in through food purchases will provide scholarships to local high school seniors.
