Hillsborough deputies investigate shooting of man, 19, in Plant City

By the Tampa Bay Times Staff

A 19-year-old Ocala man was shot Wednesday, May 18, after he pointed a gun at two people outside a bar and liquor store on State Road 60, deputies said.

Tyler Ray Howell was expected to survive his injuries. He was shot by Durrell Anthony Boswell, 23, of Plant City, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Howell was outside Twilight Zone Package & Lounge about 11 p.m. when he walked toward Boswell's car pointing a gun at Boswell and a female passenger. Boswell, investigators said, shot Howell twice and then left the scene.

He and the woman later told deputies they did not know Howell.

Charges in the case are pending, according to the Sheriff's Office, but investigators said Boswell acted in self-defense. Howell left the scene, but later returned and was taken to Tampa General Hospital to be treated for his injuries.

According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office, the surveillance video of the scene will not be released.

We will continue to update this story as more details are released.
