A Plant City man has been arrested for leaving the scene of a fatal March 18 crash.
Miguel Angel Castaneda, 49, wrecked his 1993 Nissan Altima into a telephone pole on Old Mulberry Road near Merrin Road. Witnesses saw the driver leave the scene on foot, according to the Hillsborough County Sheriff's Office. When deputies arrived, they discovered the passenger inside of the vehicle had died.
On Monday, March 21, Castaneda was identified as the driver. Detectives located him at his home off Highway 574. He admitted he was the driver and attempted to hit the brakes when he approached a curve but stepped on the gas instead and lost control, according to HCSO. He left because he had been drinking beer that day. He was arrested and transported to Orient Road Jail.
