Focus on Fitness: Boost your energy

Feeling sleepy? Reaching for energy drinks or coffee for that mid-day pick-me-up? Don’t have enough energy to get everything done?

A cup of coffee in the morning is a great way to increase alertness, but it can lead to insomnia later in the day. No sleep equals no energy.

Head to the gym instead. Believe it or not, a daily dose of exercise can help you feel more energized.

Working out releases endorphins. When we are doing something that requires a burst of energy, our body releases endorphins. It’s these endorphins that produce a natural “high.” Not only does this give you the energy to get through your day, but it also improves your mood.

Exercise improves the quality of your sleep. When you get a better night’s rest, you are sure to feel more refreshed in the morning.

A good workout leads to sharper focus. This means you are mentally ready to tackle the day.

What kind of exercise is best? Any kind of physical activity that gets your blood flowing and your heart rate up is going to up your energy level. Find something that you enjoy doing and that will make it much easier to stick to. A good cardio workout is going to strengthen your heart, giving you more stamina.  If you prefer being outdoors, go for a jog, walk or bike ride.  If you prefer lower-intensity activities, try a yoga class.

All in all, eating healthy, drinking plenty of water, reducing stress and sticking to an exercise regimen are all key ingredients to stay mentally alert and full of the energy you need to get through the day.
