
The Plant City Police Department is investigating a fatal shooting that occurred in the early morning hours of May 2 at the Speedlane Express located at 501 N. County Line Road. At approximately 2:15 a.m., officers were dispatched to the scene in reference to a report of a shooting with injuries. Upon arrival, officers located an adult male on the ground near a vehicle with an apparent gunshot wound. Officers immediately began administering life-saving measures. However, despite their efforts, the individual was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Preliminary investigation, including witness statements and security video review, indicates the incident began as a verbal dispute inside the gas station and escalated into a confrontation outside. During the encounter, the victim advanced toward the shooter while holding a knife, placing the shooter in fear for his life. In response, the shooter fired a single round, striking the victim.
The shooter fully cooperated with officers upon their arrival. Based on the initial facts and evidence, the incident appears to fall within the protection provided under Florida’s “Stand Your Ground”law.
This remains an active investigation.
