Durant’s pitcher delivered an impressive performance on the mound.
The 5–3 Durant Cougars traveled to Bloomingdale on Tuesday to take on the Bulls varsity baseball team in what turned into a tightly contested pitcher’s duel that came down to the final inning. Strong pitching, solid defense, and a few key moments defined the matchup, but in the end, Bloomingdale walked it off for a narrow 2–1 victory.
Durant began the game at the plate with Brady Kelley leading things off. Kelley put the ball in play, but flew out to right field for the first out of the inning. Brennan Bailey followed and grounded out to third base. With two outs, Shawn Graves stepped in but popped up to the second baseman, giving the Bulls a quick three up, three down start.
Tristan Macpherson took the mound for the Cougars in the bottom of the first inning. He opened strong by striking out the Bulls’ leadoff batter on five pitches. The next hitter reached base after drawing a four-pitch walk. During the following at-bat, Macpherson recorded his second strikeout of the inning, but the runner who had walked earlier stole second base. With two outs and a runner in scoring position, Bloomingdale’s cleanup hitter stepped in, but he flew out to center field to end the inning with the score still tied at 0–0.
Durant threatened in the top of the second inning. Jacob Purcell led things off with the Cougars’ first hit of the game, ripping a hard single past the third baseman. Jackson McClellan followed immediately with another hard-hit single that shot through the right side past second base on the first pitch he saw. With two runners on and no outs, Macpherson came to the plate looking to help his own cause, but he struck out after a full-count battle. Caleb Lambert followed but also struck out, bringing Max Mazur to the plate with two outs. Mazur struck out as well, as the Bulls pitcher recovered nicely after the two leadoff singles to escape the inning without allowing a run.
Macpherson returned to the mound in the bottom of the second and continued to pitch effectively. The first batter he faced flew out to center field for the opening out. Macpherson then recorded his third strikeout of the game before issuing a two-out walk. However, he quickly ended the inning when the next hitter grounded out to third base, keeping the game scoreless.
The Cougars went quietly again in the top of the third. Aidan Junttila led off but flew out to left field. Kelley followed with a groundout to third on the first pitch, and Bailey popped up in the infield to complete another quick three-up, three-down inning.
Bloomingdale finally broke through in the bottom of the third. Macpherson walked the leadoff batter to start the inning. A wild pitch during the next at-bat allowed the runner to move up to second base. The next batter popped up to the shortstop for the first out, and another hitter flew out to center field without the runner advancing. With two outs and the runner still on second, another wild pitch allowed the speedy Bulls baserunner to race all the way home to score the first run of the game. The following batter flew out to right field, but Bloomingdale had taken a 1–0 lead.
Durant struggled to generate offense in the fourth inning. Graves struck out on a full count to start the frame. Purcell then struck out on another full-count battle, and McClellan grounded out to shortstop to end the inning.
Macpherson answered with one of his strongest innings in the bottom of the fourth. He struck out the leadoff batter for his fourth strikeout of the night and quickly followed it with his fifth strikeout against the next hitter. After hitting the following batter with a pitch, a wild pitch advanced the runner to second. Macpherson then walked another hitter, putting two runners on with two outs. However, he showed resilience and struck out his sixth batter of the game to escape the jam and keep the deficit at one.
Durant finally tied the game in the top of the fifth. Macpherson helped himself again at the plate by leading off with a single. During Lambert’s at-bat, a wild pitch moved Macpherson to second. Lambert then delivered a single that put runners on the corners with no outs. Mazur struck out for the first out, but Lambert stole second to put two runners in scoring position. Junttila struck out for the second out, bringing Kelley back up near the top of the lineup. Kelley drew a walk to load the bases. Moments later, a wild pitch allowed Macpherson to score from third, tying the game at 1–1 before Bailey struck out to end the inning.
Macpherson continued his strong outing in the bottom of the fifth. The first batter flew out to right field. He then struck out the next hitter on just three pitches for his seventh strikeout and followed that with another strikeout to end the inning, giving him eight strikeouts through five frames.
Durant threatened again in the sixth inning. Graves grounded out to second to start the inning. Purcell then drew a four-pitch walk, giving the Cougars a runner with one out. McClellan flew out to center field, and Macpherson followed with a fly ball to right field that ended the inning.
In the bottom of the sixth, Bloomingdale nearly found extra bases when the leadoff batter hit a deep drive to right field. However, McClellan made an incredible catch to record the first out. The next batter grounded out to second on the first pitch, and the final hitter of the inning flew out to center field, keeping the game tied heading into the final inning.
Lambert led off the top of the seventh for Durant but grounded out to shortstop on the first pitch. Tanner Gonser pinch-hit and struck out for the second out. CT Freedman stepped in for his first at-bat of the game but also struck out, sending the game to the bottom of the seventh still tied.
Gonser took the mound for Durant in the final inning. He started well by getting the leadoff batter to ground out to shortstop. The next hitter worked a walk and then stole second base. During the steal attempt, an overthrow by the catcher allowed the runner to advance to third with only one out. Gonser responded by striking out the next batter, putting Durant one out away from forcing extra innings. However, the next Bloomingdale hitter hit a hard ball back toward the mound. The ball slipped past the pitcher, allowing the runner from third to score and giving the Bulls a walk-off 2–1 victory.
Despite the tough loss, Macpherson delivered an impressive performance on the mound for Durant, recording eight strikeouts and keeping the Cougars in the game throughout the night.
