Durant hockey to play in league championship game Wednesday

The 2020-21 Lightning High School Hockey League playoffs are coming to a close tomorrow night and the Durant Cougars are in the hunt for the championship.

Durant will face Seminole in Amalie Arena at 7 p.m. in a battle between the two top seeds of this year’s playoff bracket. The Cougars followed up on their first-round bye with a 4-3 win over Newsome in the divisional round, then made the championship cut cruising past Manatee to a 6-2 win. Seminole got there with a 6-1 win over Palm Harbor in the divisional round and escaped the conference finals with a 4-3 win over East Lake.

The Cougars are now at the end of an impressive season which saw the team post a 19-3-0 overall record with a Modin Division-leading 128 goals for and just 46 goals against. They were unbeaten in division play and also beat Seminole in both of their regular-season meetings, winning by scores of 5-2 (Oct. 2) and 3-2 (Oct. 23).

Amalie Arena will open for fans at 6 p.m. and attendees will be asked to sit in select sections of the west side of the arena. Everyone will have their temperature checked and is required to sign a waiver and wear a mask covering both the nose and the mouth. Gaiters, bandanas, masks with vents/valves and costume masks are not permitted. Concessions will be available.
