For many families, the back-to-school season brings excitement. It also brings the expense of school supplies. Thanks to the annual Stuff the Bus program, hundreds of local students will head back to class with one less thing to worry about.

The annual Stuff the Bus program, organized through the Kiwanis Club in partnership with Unity in the Community, has once again rallied East Hillsborough County to ensure local students head back to school with the supplies they need to succeed. This year’s collection took place at Stingray Chevrolet in Plant City, where generous donations from businesses, organizations, and community members helped fill an impressive 1,600 backpacks destined for students across 28 local schools.

Over the course of the collection effort, volunteers sorted notebooks, pencils, folders, crayons, glue sticks, markers, and other classroom essentials before carefully packing each backpack. Soon, school resource officers and additional volunteers will pick up the completed backpacks and deliver them directly to schools throughout Plant City and eastern Hillsborough County, making sure they are ready for students before the first day of class.

For many families, the cost of preparing children for school continues to rise each year. Between backpacks, notebooks, calculators, art supplies, and other required materials, back-to-school shopping can quickly become a significant financial burden. Programs like Stuff the Bus help ease that pressure while also ensuring every child begins the school year with the basic tools needed for learning.

The initiative also benefits local teachers, many of whom routinely spend their own money purchasing supplies for students who arrive without them. By providing classrooms with students who are already equipped, the program helps reduce some of the out-of-pocket expenses educators often face.

One of the most inspiring aspects of Stuff the Bus is the number of community members who step forward to help. Local Scout troops and students working toward community service hours spent time organizing donations and filling backpacks assembly-line style. Volunteers sort supplies into neat piles before carefully packing each bag, transforming stacks of school supplies into ready-to-use backpacks that will soon be in the hands of local children.

Their efforts demonstrate that community service doesn’t always require grand gestures.

Sometimes it simply means giving a few hours of your time to make a meaningful difference in someone else’s life.

This year’s program also adapted to meet changing school safety requirements. According to Kiwanis Club President Sharon Moody, the organization was able to provide clear backpacks for schools that now require them.

By responding to those changing requirements, the program helps ensure families won’t have to replace backpacks after receiving them or worry about purchasing a different style that meets school policies.

While the backpacks will be delivered directly to participating schools, families who are still in need of school supplies will also have an opportunity to receive assistance. Distribution for families seeking supplies will take place on July 27, helping ensure additional students have what they need before classes begin.

The annual event has become much more than a school supply drive. It serves as a reminder of what can happen when local businesses, nonprofits, volunteers, educators, law enforcement, and residents work toward a common goal.

Stingray Chevrolet once again served as the collection site, providing space for donations and volunteer efforts throughout the campaign. The partnership highlights how local businesses can play an important role in strengthening the community beyond their everyday operations.

For the Kiwanis Club and Unity in the Community, Stuff the Bus represents months of planning, fundraising, coordinating donations, and recruiting volunteers. While the backpacks themselves may seem simple, each one represents countless acts of generosity from individuals who believe every child deserves an equal opportunity to begin the school year feeling prepared and confident. As volunteers loaded backpack after backpack, there was a shared understanding that each bag would soon belong to a student excited (and perhaps a little nervous) about the first day of school. Having a new backpack filled with fresh supplies may seem like a small thing, but for many children, it can boost confidence and provide a sense of pride as they walk into the classroom.

The success of Stuff the Bus is a testament to the generous spirit that continues to define the Plant City area and the surrounding East Hillsborough County community. Year after year, neighbors step up to help neighbors, businesses invest in local families, and volunteers dedicate their time to creating brighter opportunities for local students.

With another successful Stuff the Bus campaign in the books, hundreds of children will begin the school year equipped with the supplies they need and the knowledge that an entire community is cheering them on from day one.
