When Dr. Scotty Huang, a Plant City pediatrician for many years, and sons, David, Greg, Robert, and Fred, returned to Plant City recently, a flood of memories emerged. Dr. Scotty and his wife, Hsiu-yun, settled in Plant City in 1972, and by 1974, Dr. Scotty had established his place as Plant City’s pediatrician, and their sons began their years passing through Plant City High School. Hsiu-yun Huang had focused on her main responsibility – that of raising their family. It was Hsiu for whom they returned to Plant City. The Celebration of Hsiu’s Life was held Saturday, April 25, 2026, in the city she loved for the 50 years she focused on her family and her community.
Hsiu had volunteered many hours over the years as a Pink Lady at the South Florida Baptist Hospital and volunteered at the library and on the library board. In her free time, she excelled on the tennis court. The four boys also excelled at tennis and academics at Plant City High School, graduating at the top of their classes: 1978, 1980, 1984, 1988.
On this day, several hundred friends and former patients filled the delicately decorated space in the building at the Strawberry Festival grounds and enjoyed a heartwarming video devoted to Hsiu and her 89 active and loving years. As a special touch, in addition to the heartfelt words of Shich-Chieh Huang (Dr. Scotty), four sons, David, Greg, Robert, and Fred, delivered humorous and touching eulogies.
For the following Sunday, the Huang family was invited to a special tour and visit to the new headquarters of the Plant City History & Photo Archives. Prior to moving to Tallahassee, about 2020, Dr. Scotty and Hsiu Huang wanted to donate to the Plant City Photo Archives and decided to sponsor the developing history center and library. The new Dr. Scotty & Hsiu Huang History Center was inaugurated in early 2021, and the plaque was hung over the doorway to the library; it became the History Center. That also opened up the possibility of growing the resources and the programs of the new History Center.
The Archives worked with additional interns, provided additional research resources, and, with the founding of the Writers in Residence Program, came additional writing and publishing.
After much deliberation, the Board of Directors of the Plant City Photo Archives changed its name and “brand” and became Plant City History & Photo Archives, with an emphasis on the history element of the organization. Additionally, President Ed Verner encouraged the directors to consider a move to quarters that would not only provide an ability to make better and greater use of a gallery and event room, it would also have a dedicated history center. Further, it was part of an outstanding historic building which also featured the outstanding camera and collage displays.
On Sunday, April 26, Dr. Scotty and members of the Huang family, those without earlier flight schedules, were honored with the inauguration of the new Dr. Scotty & Hsiu Huang History Center in a beautiful, renovated library center with the necessary books, computers, resources, a large meeting table, and new seating. Best of all, Dr. Scotty was pleased; his sons and their families were pleased to see the new facility and to see for the first time, the Dr. Scotty & Hsiu Huang History Center. The program included a presentation on the activities of the history center, about the interns, the programs, and research and writing of the writers group.
After a pleasant tour, refreshments, and visit, the Huang family left for flights and rides home, and the Board Members, staff, and Archives members look forward to hosting their visits in the future.
