Capt. John Borders promoted to deputy chief of police

The Plant City Police Department announced this morning Capt. John Borders has been promoted to the rank of deputy chief of police.

The promotion was announced by Chief Bill McDaniel during a ceremony held earlier at the Plant City Police Department headquarters.

The  ceremony, attended by members of the Plant City Police Department and City Manager Greg Horwedel, paid homage to Borders and his contributions to the agency and the city throughout his career. Borders has served with the Plant City department for more than 25 years, since becoming a patrol officer in 1987.

He was promoted to sergeant in 1994 and to the command rank of captain in 1997. Borders has overseen nearly every division within the department since then. He has served as the acting chief of police during times when McDaniel was out of town.

Borders is a veteran of the U.S. Army and possesses hundreds of hours of advanced training in supervisory and law enforcement techniques. He has received 17 letters of appreciation from the community and multiple agency commendations, ranging from Officer of the Year to a Unit Citation.

“Dep. Chief John Borders exemplifies the type of quiet professionalism that we are blessed to have here in Plant City,” Horwedel said. “He has done an outstanding job for our community since October 1987. He has always been responsive to our citizens’ needs and desires for exceptional public safety services.”

Borders currently commands the department’s Administrative Services Division, which is responsible for accreditation, grants management, internal affairs and training.
