BREAKING: Two children hit by SUV while walking to school

Two Plant City children were struck by an SUV while trying to walk to school this morning.

According to Plant City Police Department Traffic Management Unit reports, the children, ages 6 and 8, were walking eastbound at about 7:25 a.m. May 9, along Victoria near Dort streets, after missing their school bus. They were headed to Wilson Elementary school about a mile away.

The SUV was also traveling eastbound when it hit the children.

The 8-year-old was transported by Plant City Fire Rescue to Tampa General Hospital, with non-life-threatening injuries. The 6-year-old was flown to Tampa General Hospital with serious injuries.

Police continue to investigate the accident, but no citations are expected for the driver of the SUV.
