Plant City Observer

ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: Brent May

In the Wednesday, July 8, Juniors Baseball district championship, Plant City found itself trailing to Lake Wales late in the game. But the hometown All-Stars managed to rally back. Thanks to Brent May’s go-ahead, three-RBI hit in the sixth inning, the team pulled out the 8-7 win.

You scored the go-ahead runs to help get your team to sectionals. How did that feel?

Honestly, I think it felt good. In the beginning, we didn’t do too well, error-wise. Toward the end, I think we came together well as a team. We worked together.

What was the moment where everything clicked, you guys tightened up and made the comeback?

Honestly, I think it would be my one at-bat. It kind of rallied up everybody to where they would put some more effort to it. It was the first pitch, and then I hit it over the left fielder. I scored three runs.

What are you looking forward to about sectionals?

Hopefully, better competition. Lake Wales was tough for us, though, in the championship game. And then, I hope we kind of play better as a team than we did.

How long have you been playing baseball?

Since tee-ball, whenever that was. Eight, nine years ago.

What first made you start playing the game?

I guess it was that one sport that every kid likes to play.

Do you play any others?

Basketball.

What else do you like to do for fun, besides sports?

Fishing and hunting.

What’s your favorite fishing trip moment?

Probably just going out with my grandpa, just us two.

What’s your favorite fishing spot?

Probably the Hillsborough River, down by Zephyrhills.

Where do you go to school?

Tomlin Middle. I’m going into eighth grade.

What’s your favorite subject?

P.E.

What’s your favorite sports movie of all time?

“Major League.”

If you could play any sport you’ve never tried before, what would it be?

Probably football. I would be the QB.

Who’s your favorite athlete of all time?

Andrew McCutchen.

If you could play ball for any pro team, what would it be?

The Pittsburgh Pirates.

Are you a Pirates fan because of Cutch, or did you grow up a fan?

I grew up a Pirates fan. We have family up there.

Let’s say someone starts playing tee-ball for the first time and asks for advice. What’s the first thing you’d tell them about?

Leadership. Just because you make a mistake doesn’t mean you have to take that to the field, to your next at-bat or whatever you’re doing.

If you could meet any famous person, who would it be?

If I could go back in the past, probably Jackie Robinson. I’d probably ask him what it was like coming into the MLB.

If you could have any superpower, what would it be?

Invincibility.

You have a billion dollars in the bank. What do you buy?

Probably a mansion, first. Then, probably an expensive sports car. I would say a 1968 Chevrolet Camaro.
