As summer approaches in Plant City, families searching for a safe, enriching, and memorable experience for their children don’t have to look far. The Plant City Family YMCA is once again offering its highly anticipated summer camp program. One that stands out as the only camp in the area accredited by the American Camping Association (ACA), a distinction that speaks volumes about its quality and commitment to safety. Operated under the Tampa YMCA, the Plant City camp is part of a nationally recognized network that has undergone rigorous evaluation to meet the highest standards in youth programming. According to Program Director Shelby Ruggles, this accreditation ensures that families can trust the experience their children will receive.

“The Tampa YMCA Association is nationally accredited through the American Camping Association,” Ruggles explained. “Which means that we are nationally recognized for delivering the safest, most diverse offerings and creating an experience that campers will enjoy and never forget.”

Running from June 1 through August 7, the YMCA’s summer camp program operates Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., with early drop-off available as early as 7:00 a.m. and extended pick-up until 6:00 p.m. All at no additional cost. This flexibility is a major benefit for working families looking for dependable childcare that goes beyond simple supervision.

At its core, the YMCA camp is designed to offer far more than just a way to pass the time during summer break. It’s an immersive experience where children can discover new interests, build confidence, and form lasting friendships. Each week introduces a new theme ranging from basketball and soccer to volleyball and water-based activities, keeping the program fresh, engaging, and dynamic.

The Signature Camp, open to children ages 6 to 12, delivers a well-rounded daily schedule that includes sports, swimming, STEM activities, arts and crafts, nature exploration, and team-building exercises. Campers are grouped by age to ensure activities are developmentally appropriate, allowing each child to feel both challenged and supported.

For many campers, the pool is a highlight and a place where real growth happens. Camper Alexander Crider shared that his favorite part of camp is “the pool and learning how to swim.” His mother echoed that sentiment, noting the significant improvement in his swimming skills since attending last summer. It’s a testament to how the YMCA blends fun with meaningful skill-building, helping children gain confidence in and out of the water.

In addition to the core camp experience, families can opt into specialty add-ons such as swim lessons and stroke development sessions, offering even more opportunities for skill advancement. While younger campers thrive in the Signature Camp, the YMCA also provides valuable programming for teens. Options like Junior Teen Camp and Junior Lifeguard Camp give participants ages 13 to 14 a chance to stay engaged while beginning to take on more responsibility. These programs serve as a bridge to one of the YMCA’s most impactful offerings: the Teen Leaders’ Club.

For the past five years, Shannon All has served as advisor for the Teen Leaders’ Club, helping guide participants as they develop confidence, character, and leadership skills.

“I have served as the advisor for the Teen Leaders’ Club for the past five years, helping guide teens as they grow in confidence, character, and leadership,” All said. “The Teen Leaders’ Club is a natural next step for youth who have enjoyed their camp years at the Y, and it also provides a meaningful pathway for teens who want to develop leadership skills through service to their community.”

Through hands-on projects and community involvement, members strengthen their communication abilities, sense of responsibility, and personal values. It’s an experience that leaves a lasting impact, something current Teen Leader Kyle Sasser can attest to.

“The connections you build with people in Teen Leaders’ Club are so special,” Sasser shared. “The club has helped me gain more confidence to walk up and start conversations. It also helped me come out of my shell and further my leadership responsibilities, as now I am the Vice President in our club and taking on leadership roles at school.”

This summer, teens can get a preview of that experience through Jr. Teen Camp or the Junior Lifeguard program, with official Teen Leaders’ Club meetings resuming in September. An August welcome event will also provide an opportunity for new participants to explore the program and get involved. With a combination of structured activities, social development, and a focus on safety, the Plant City YMCA’s summer camp program continues to be a trusted resource for families across the community. Whether it’s a child learning to swim for the first time, discovering a passion for sports, or taking their first steps into leadership, the YMCA offers an environment where growth happens naturally and memories are made daily.

Because at the end of the day, it’s not just about filling summer days, it’s about shaping who kids become.
