With a schoolteacher mom, carefully planned vacations and a little luck staying healthy, one Plant City High graduate turned perfect attendance into a springboard for academic success.
Perfect attendance isn’t easy. It takes commitment, planning, and, sometimes, a little luck.
For Darius Donaldson-Dunphy, a 2026 Plant City High School graduate, it also took a mother who made education a family priority from the very beginning.
Donaldson-Dunphy recently received recognition for never missing a single day of school from kindergarten through 12th grade — a streak spanning 13 years.
“Attending school everyday also helped me become a better student,” he said.
His mother, Desiree Gomez, who is a schoolteacher, said the achievement wasn’t something they set out to chase. It simply became part of their family’s routine. “He has always been a good student,” she said. “He has never minded attending school, and he has always been healthy.”
There were a few close calls.
“A couple of times, he got sick during Thanksgiving break or right after school ended,” she said. “I’d joke with him, ‘If you had gotten sick one day earlier, you would have ruined your perfect attendance streak.’ It really just worked out that he stayed healthy during the school year.”
Planning also played a role. Family vacations and travel were always scheduled around the school calendar, ensuring he never had to choose between making memories and making it to class.
His attendance record reflected more than showing up. It translated into academic success.
“I’ve always felt like his attendance was linked to how well he did in school,” Gomez said. “Being there every day helped him stay engaged, avoid learning gaps, be responsible and take more pride in his work.”
Donaldson-Dunphy graduated No. 32 in his class of nearly 600 students and earned the 100% Bright Futures Scholarship after completing the Cambridge AICE (Advanced International Certificate of Education) program.
“We have always instilled in him that doing well in school would allow him to be accepted into any college of his choice and open the door to the best career paths for his future,” said Gomez.
Darius will continue that journey this fall at University of South Florida, where he plans to study civil engineering. His family recently attended his orientation as he prepares for the next chapter.
For Gomez, the lessons her son learned from perfect attendance extend far beyond the classroom. “I’ve always told him to use ‘I’ve never missed a day of school in my life’ when he has job interviews,” she said. “That shows how reliable he is, and employers are always looking for people like that.”
She believes that reliability and commitment may have helped him earn a position at Publix last summer. “Showing up every day says a lot about a person,” she said. “It shows responsibility, dedication and that you can be counted on.”
Donaldson-Dunphy was one of seven seniors from Hillsborough County that were recognized for perfect attendance at a School Board meeting last month. Additionally, Suncoast Credit Union also gifted each student a $500 scholarship.
